Hello, whilst not strictly horse related, I was wondering if anyone had any 'novel' (if you'll pardon the pun!) Suggestions of places to find/buy rare or book titles. I'm looking for quite a niche textbook and cannot avoid the listed price on Amazon or eBay. But nowhere else I have looked (thriftbooks, abebooks, book depository) stocks it, but I'm wondering if I'm looking in the right places.

I don’t have a good answer except to try a library (or British library?) if you can’t afford it but could just borrow it / read it at the library. In fact I think even local libraries have a service to order books they don’t have from others around the country.

Www.the-saleroom.com has some very rare finds - its a huge auction database. There’s some amazing items from very rare antiques, jewellery, riding paraphernalia, books….ohhh its vast!

Google Books sometimes has good links both to prices and to the nearest library copy.

I agree you should name what you are looking for.

Unfortunately the internet and on line sales means one is very unlikely to pick up a cheap copy of a rare or valuable book. One may however find some cheapish books on offer for exhorbitant sums. Oxfam seem to cyheck the market and price at the market price or more.

The bright side is that, if you buy an expensive book second hand at the normal market price, you can keep the packaging and when you have finished with it, you can sell it again.
I bought the autobiography of the German Rider Buerkner from a Swiss dealer for a hefty price and I dont regret that at all. On the other hand it is permanently by the computer and I am not parting with it.

I was quite surprised to find a textbook that my daughter needed when she was at uni in a local library. It saved her £100 on buying it. If a library doesn’t stock it in their county they can order them in from anywhere but it does vary from county to county. My nearest charges £20 for an out of county and £40 for an international but the next county over only charges from £5. Be aware though that you can’t always keep them for long if out of county.
