Hi,

Apart from EIA, what can cause anaemia in horses? I ask because my pony nearly collapsed in the field on Saturday. She was running a temp, and had fast shallow resp rate. Vet came and took bloods, and gave shot of antibiotics and something to bring her temp down. She has perked up, and is on 5 day course of antibiotics. Blood results came back normal for white blood cell count, but did show she was borderline anaemic. Have got Redcell on vets advice, and am now waiting to see what happens over the next couple of days. Its not nice seeing my pony's legs buckling under her, and her struggling to stand.

BTW she had a annual flu and tet booster on Friday.

Pickle we have had plenty of problems with anemia, not as extreme as yours but at one point I was riding him in walk, when someone pointed out he had his eyes closed!!!! he was VERY lethargic. A few weeks field rest and some equisup (simular to red cell) seemed to perk him up, allthough because how regulary he is anemic he is constantly on iron supplements

There was talk of Garlic causing it at one time. Can't remember the exact ins and outs, you'll have to do some research. What I do remember is that it was evidence enough for me at the time to stop feeding it all together.

Wouldnt want to guess the cause, but Ive had a big horse who was always anaemic when blood tested.

Vet used to offer this really expensive tub of something (name escapes me) but instead i put him on dried nettles and seaweed as both rich in iron.

He never had a low count again!! (and was MUCH cheaper alternative than the 'tub' he had originally offered!! xx

Thanks All.

Have had a look at the garlic issues, apparently this came from extrapolated data from feeding horses onions (being of the same family as garlic), and as such there are no reasons not to feed garlic to horses, being rich in sulphur, B vits it actually promotes a healthy immune system. Additional nettle and seaweed might be an idea, although I am now getting concerned about the amount and number of supplements the poor girl is getting. To list:
Dengie Performance Vits and Mins
Mint
Garlic
Cider Vinegar
NAF Respirator
Cortaflex
NAF MSM (for tendon injury)
Global Herbs Windgall (for windgall assoc with tendon injury)

To my mind there are now far too many, and am going to have to sit down and look at all the ingredients and work out where I am doubling up.
