Anal Gland Removal

Hi all my dads mongrel is going in to have an Anal gland removal in the next week can anyone advise on what the recovery time is like.

Dog is a lot of a wimp :( and we are really worried how he is going to take it. Unfortunately he is having to have them squeezed every 6-8 weeks at the moment and is obviously in pain uncomfortable.

It's not a pleasant op, my dog struggled for several days after. She ended up having tramadol as she was in pain.
The first poo after the op can be a bit of a struggle and they can leak a bit after too. It's best in the long run for them but it's not nice. Sorry!
 
i saw your post and thought i'd respond although i apologise for not answering your question as such, iv'e had terrible problems with one of my dogs and it led me to research the problem before removing the glands as the risk of incontinence after removal is a little high for comfort, i found through trial and error that diet was absolutely a contributing factor to the glands expressing properly and despite my vets not agreeing with me i changed to a high quality hypoallergenic dried food which hardened up the poo's enough to express the glands on the way out, soft poo's cause the glands to block., i have noticed that now it's only when my dog scoffs something that upsets his stomach that his glands are affected. Just on the off chance that your uncle hasn't exhausted all options before coming to his decision i thought i'd offer this up .
i have read the operation leaves them uncomfortable so good pain relief definitely needed

I agree with Shady. My dog also had this problem - and was having to have her glands squeezed every month or so, often getting infections. I can't put her on a full raw diet as I'm currently in a tiny cottage with a mini freezer and very little space to store meat - however, she does have chicken wings regularly and the bone in her diet has really helped. She can now go 3 or 4 months with out a problem - and horrible as it is, I found out how to squeeze them myself to avoid stressful trips to the vet. I also wouldn't want the operation because of the risk of incontinence - not without trying other options (which you may have done anyway - apologies if so!).

LOL Karenza, i also learnt how to do them courtesy of vet and youtube!, boy does that stuff squirt out, got me in the face the other month, gahhhhhhhh :D x
