Hi I’m thinking of getting my horse one of these as a standard headpiece sits very close to her ears which seems to annoy her and she often rubs her nose after a ride. Any recommendations please? I don’t have the budget for Schockemohle or fairfax sadly but want good quality! Someone suggested evo equine - any experience of those?

Is your browband too tight? If so it will pull the headpeice onto the backs of the ears which is no wonder it's irritating.

Even an anatomical bridle wouldn't solve that problem.

Its amazing how many FULL bridles you see (full for example) that actually need an extra large browband. Both of mine needed extra large browbands on there bridles plus i use the protecta masta pole thingymajig!

I bought a Collegiate bridle recently as didn't want to spend a fortune. The headpiece is monocrown and shaped and it comes with reins. I think it was about £90-£100. Leather is ok, not fantastic but it soft and supple, but then it isn't too expensive so you get what you pay for I suppose!

I have a Dever anatomical grackle for mine. I think it cost just over £100 (convinced my OH to buy me it ). It’s good quality leather and nice padding on it as well. My local tack shop ordered it in for me as we needed to mix and match bits (special horse has most ridiculous sized head, full headpiece, x full brow and and cob noseband....) but I think they have a couple of online suppliers and a website as well

Try a bigger browband first - it almost needs to droop - then see if your headpiece will sit further back and stay there. If not get an anatomical head piece

The nose rubbing can be noseband sitting in wrong place (for the horse) - mind did this even with a very loosely fitted cavesson - I now use a Micklem (competition one), and much better. However, I did have to change the browband as the one it came with was too short (could get a finger underneath, but I prefer it to be really loose). Horse is much happier now, no resistence or rubbing.

Am curious as to whether people think a Micklem is more comfortable than say a dever mono crown bridle with padded browband and either a grackle or plain padded noseband (depending on the activity)? Assuming everything fitted correctly. I have the above dever and my dressage instructor is encouraging me to buy a Micklem since she feels it is better designed. (I’ve borrowed a Micklem and didn’t notice an obvious difference in how he went)

Thanks for all the suggestions I’m going to borrow a larger browband to try but might end up changing bridle so interested in any comments on bridle types.

It’s prob horses for courses really... I have a Micklem as well as my Dever grackle and mine seems to be more comfortable in the Dever. He’s definitely more comfortable in the Micklem than his old non anatomical bridle. I did notice a difference straightaway when I switched to the Micklem for flatwork from my old bridle but he goes just as nice (if not nicer) in the Dever however that could also be down to the bit ( straight loose ring in Dever vs neue shule trans verbindend in Micklem). If you didn’t notice much difference between the two I personally wouldn’t bother changing...

I have this one and I love it:

It's £75 from Kramer, so not cheap, but not expensive either. The leather quality is lovely and soft and it fits so much nicer than a normal bridle - I really love the headpiece on this one. It's nice and wide and padded.
