I have been allowed to put my new girl in a separate field adjoining the other field for the first week, so she will be able to see the other mares and hopefully get to know them before being in with them, the concern I have is that a lady a few months ago did the same thing and her mare was kicked on the first day in with the others and really badly down to the bone!!!!
Do I put boots on mine to protect her legs? and if so what kind?
many thanks

The only thing you can really do to prevent bad kicks is make sure no horses have back shoes on.

You could put brushing boots on but i doubt they'll do much good!

Having no back shoes does not prevent serious kick injuries. My mare had her cannon bone fractured by a horse that had no shoes on and it was a glancing blow, had my mare been kicked full on her leg would have shattered.

It tooks months of box rest for her to mend and was a year before she was jumping again, the vets said if it was a foreleg and not a hindleg she would never have been able to jump again.

The only way to guarantee your horse doesnt get kicked it to turn it out on its own. Boots may help but accidents happen.

Our mare was kicked when she moved into the new field, it is just one of those things that happens when the horses are trying to sort out the pecking order - up until recently she had become the 'Queen' of the field - but this week they all decided to have a 'kickfest' and she was the one that came of worst. Just cuts and a bruised tendon - had the vet out and checked her over but a couple of days of box rest will put her right. Unfortunately it is just one of those things - we used to have ours out on individual turnout but she still managed to injure herself - I think it's a mare thing - just when you think you have a bit of spare cash for shopping for yourself - wham - along comes a vet bill :)

Turnout boots will always protect a little, but are no guarantee of safety.
