I have just replied to a post about cutting out hard feed by quoting an old saying I remembered.

Which in turn, made me remember a wonderful elderly man (RIP), an absolute font of a lifetime's experience with horses, the sort of person you would go to for home made remedies etc.

I had the priviledge of excercising his horses when he was finally incapable and he always said to me .......

"always smack him three times, once for what he's done and twice for what he might do"

LOL - I guess we have all moved on from that now with behavioural understanding, but is there any other "old fashioned" sayings/quotes that you remember?

Just for nostalgias sake

ETA: LOL - that makes me sound ancient! - honestly I am just a "whipper snapper" really

OMG - I am replying to myself !!!

Just to add that ... do you know/remember what a "whipper snapper" was?

When you were naughty as a kid, your admonishing parent would make you cut a "whippy stick" from the hedge which was used to whip you with!!"!

LOL - how times have changed

I am in Hungary and in childrens CHristmas stockings, as well as chocolates, they get a brach of tree to whip them with if they are naughty!!!!!!

spare the rod spoil the child (on the subject of punishment)
a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

Quite a long one- copied from a book I literally have on my lap seeing what to do about Tallys anger management issues looking in a very old book.

'Taming Vicious Horses'

First provide yourself with a stout leathern halter, strong iron staple and a hammer. Having haltered the horse pass the rope carefully downwards through the staple, remebering this class of animal is very cunning, attacks you instantly and often without warning. Pass the rope through the staple 2 or 3 further times so the horses head is in a favourable position. You now have him fast and totally in your power. This should enrage him. He will struggle fiercely to get loose. Stand by with hammer in hand and ensure staple doesn't get loose. If it continues to get loose find a stronger pivot or pulley to the rafters. Keep him there some time. Only now may you open the door, dexterously tie up a foreleg. Put in his mouth a wooden bit, 8 inches long and atleast 1.5inches diameter, this will stop him biting you. Slacken the rope. He will hop around the stable on 3 legs. If he stops hit him. Keep him moving for 20 minutes. Now he is thourougly exhusted and will be quieter. Don't take the bit out of his mouth but let his foreleg down. Slap him firmly in the ribs to ensure he has got up. The fierce expression will now have dissapeared. He will now obey you for the day, don't let anyone handle him for a week. To fully tame him repeat 2 or 3 times a day for 3 weeks. Leave the halter on so he can be drawn up anywhere. He will now do anything for you.

LOL - Rara - that sounds just like a Monty Roberts demo !!!

HollyCat - what an excellent idea - I think I might include a branch in my own children's stockings

I was tempted to include a branch in my naughty kittens Christmas stockings. Found suitable looking implement in pet shop! However, despite present being hidden in my knicker drawer kittens found present and deceided little leather tassles on end of stick (for smacking I firmly told them) were in fact for pouncing and playing with No fooling the kittens I am afraid!

FOr maximum effect switch for naughty children/kittens should be sprayed with glitter paint!!!!!

an old fashioned saying my nan used to say was 'a whistling woman and a crowing hen are neither good to god nor men!' I used to whistle alot as a kid!!
In terms of horse sayings - my old riding instructor used to say A Horseman should know neither fear, nor anger....

My gran used to say that. She also said: 'If if and ands were pots and pans, what would be the use of tinkers.' Very obscure but I *think* I got her drift!

One white foot, buy a horse; two white feet, try a horse; three white feet, look well about him; four white feet, do without him.
My horse has four white feet and my gran often repeats this saying to me!

- I think if anyone tried that the RSPCA or a horse rescue society would be round in a shot and we'd be put away for animal cruelty!-I don't think one of my horses would do anything for me If I did that to him!!!
grin.gif

Not horse related by my Nana is a wealth of saying I'm never entirely sure I understand!! hehe:

'You know what thought did - it peed the bed and blamed the blanket'

'Laying in bed won't get the baby fed'

When I had a difficult dominant mare my instructor used to regularly quote to me:
'Ask a stallion, discuss with a mare, tell a gelding'... lol I now own a gelding!

xx

Just remember another - the farmer where we kept our ponies used to say the pony was worth £100 for every time they rolled right over.

That makes Daisy free, she never goes right over!

"Dont change your clout till may is out"

[/ QUOTE ]

I know this as "don't cast a clout til May is out"! My Nana (RIP) used to say it and now Mum does. Apparently a "clout" was a layer of fat and feathers people wore in winter, though I've never been able to confirm that! Great saying though.

"A stitch in time saves nine" is another good one, still very true too

Ooh Arabelle, It must of gone up as I was told to add a guinea every time a horse rolled right over.....

If the wind changes, your face'll stay like that.

For want of a nail a shoe was lost,
For want of a shoe a horse was lost,
For want of a horse a battle was lost,
For want of a battle a war was lost.
All for the want of a horse shoe nail.

Handsome is as handsome does.

Horses for courses.

its a lot like nuts and bolts " if the riders nuts the horse bolts"!!

No hour of life id wasted that is spent in the saddle!!

Green and green make black and blue

A woman needs 2 animals, the horse of her dreams and a jackass to pay for it!
