Hi

Anyone recommend a good dealer/breeder for Andalusians in the South? Hants/West Sussex/Dorset preferable?

A friend is looking for a quality 6yo+ Not planning to be doing any high level competing, but looking for a PRE with the characteristic kind temperament.

Fiona Foy, based in Frome, is extremely good at knowing what's available and will give you her honest opinion...highly recommend her

Ten a penny in Spain at the moment, people cant afford to keep them, I know of one that was for sale for 24K (very well bred) and ended being sold by the livery year for 3k to pay for the owners debts to the yard owner.. :-o

If your on FB search 'Horse Owners in Spain' theres a few horses on there.. and it costs about £800 to get one from Spain to the UK...

I do also know a stud that is selling 10 of them over here, but they are 1,2 and 3 year olds..

Try Alemany Bird Andalusians. They have contacts in Spain an/or Majorca (one of the two, can't quite remember which:rolleyes:) and will meet up with you over there to show you the horses.I think they're in Cambridgeshire though.

Sorry, just realised that's nowhere near you and I spelt it wrong anyway. If anyone's interested it's Colne valley :P

Hello all

Thank you so much for all the replies, my friend is going to visit Colne Valley,

Harlequin - Ddi you have a good experience with them?

If your friend wants a Spanish Horse - She needs to ask for a PRE passport.

Andalusian - just means it was born in the Andalucia, which means there is no guarantee of quality and the stud book won't accept it. May not be a 'biggy' for your friend but I personally would avoid anything sold as an Andalusian.

I could thoroughly recommend someone but she brings the horses over from Spain. Some people don't like the idea of it but it's completely safe with this stud and horses are top quality.

Yes be careful what you buy.... Cheap or otherwise.

Dorset is Emma West. Her stallion is Maryss Nogal from Maryss PRE Stud. Also worth a look.

I would urge you (and your friend) to THOROUGHLY investigate the breed before purchasing. The legendary "kind temperament" is often misinterpreted to mean quiet and ploddy like a cob, which most certainly DOES NOT describe the PRE horse! They are the most fantastic horse ever (I have had PRE's for 20 years), but they are super intelligent and sensitive and are not a good choice for novice or nervous owners.

Hi

Thank you - dont worry, she is not a novice, she has researched the 'sensitive' nature. We've had many discussions about it. Her current horse is very quiet now but even at 26yo he will 'look' at everything. He used to be incredibly naughty! so she isn't looking for a plod... she mainly wants something that isn't super super hot! if you know what I mean.

There are three main "hot bloods": The English Thoroughbred, the Arab, and the original: the Spanish horse. They can be hot!

Totally agree! People seem to be blissfully unaware that they are hotbloods, whilst I would not have anything else now as I love their sensitivity and intelligence, I have had a couple that were very very sharp.

Mine is so not hot he's bordering on dead! Never spooks, never "looks" at anything, makes me work on days he cant be bothered which is most days when he isnt jumping. Sensitive though. Definately perfect

O P, PLEASE go onto BAPSH's Facebook page before you purchase anything. There have been a number of recent posts about dealers where people have been well and truly stung! They specifically mention at least one of the names you have on this thread. One person at least has ended up with a crippled horse. Its also a great place for some good advice from experienced Iberian owners (so straight from the horse's mouth as the saying goes)
As said here, you must do your research. As with other breeds there are some less than honest people around. Also, the PRE (and Lusitano) are by nature a VERY hot breed. Yes some are less so but they can all be challenging at times. It is not a horse you should take on at a whim.

I've had my PRE for over 3 years now and he is amazing. But the early days were absolutely a challenge. Not trying to put you off, but please make sure you don't end up losing money as none of us can afford that :)

Cortez is spot on. There are the occasional ones (one in a million types) that have quiet /ploddy temperaments (along with gorgeous looks), but they really are few and far between. PRE's are definitely intelligent and sensitive and can be anxious and spooky. If you find a ploddy type, it's fine for a novice...but the other type definitely isn't suitable! I'd steer clear of young ones as well, a novice would be best suited to one that is at least 9 years old.

I second the recommendation for Fiona Foy.

They are very friendly and helpful on the BAPSH website, gave me tons of advice. I got a crossbred iberian and I had 2 years of hell with him til I got it right.

Bear in mind that the Spanish horse have a reputation for being calm and gentle IN SPAIN... in temperatures of 30+ degrees, with poor forage and scrubby grazing, not to mention strict spanish training methods. Bring the horse over here to experience our cool british weather, on the lush grass we have here, top notch forage and fancy feed, you have a totally different animal...

A lot of good advice on here.
Ditto the Facebook site. I'm a member and it is useful.

I would also be happy to talk via pm of you had any questions. I am definitely not an expert but I know plenty of PRE's and at very least it's nice to pick someones brain!
