Hi, I am interested in using a stallion this coming year who is only available via frozen semen now. Do you know the success rate re this method as opposed to chilled? Last year I only used chilled. The mare in question took second time around and was a maiden, so her fertility should be ok.

The per cycle pregnancy rate for frozen is around 45-55%, whereas with chilled it's around 65-75% depending on the stallion. However, it can vary massively, and some stallions have frozen semen which produces per cycle pregnancy rates which are equal to, or higher than chilled semen pregnancy rates.

Best thing to do is contact the owner/stud and ask for per cycle pregnancy rates. Make sure they are per cycle, not "overall".

How old is your mare?
 
She is 5 and will be 6 by the time she goes in foal next year. The stallion in question I know very well and he has had a very high fertility rate when using chilled but I was unsure about the rates now that it will be frozen.

Well, she's a great age for it. Find out about the frozen fertility rates, as chilled and frozen fertility rates are not linked; and one cannot predict the other

If he has not been used for frozen before, only via chilled, is it just a case of try it and see? Or should they be defrosting some first to check viability, ie that the little devils are swimming at least ?

Post-thaw motility is a rough indicator of potential fertility, but the only true proof of fertility of frozen-thawed semen is it's ability to produce pregnancies.

Try to get more favourable terms as the semen is unproven

Always remember though that even if there is a difference is stated fertility rates for a particular stallion the more important affect are via how the mare is managed and how the AI and subsequent treatment.

You can increase the chances of a pregnancy more by ensuring correct mare management i.e. more variables! than picking a stallion with 10% higher rates of fertility.

Although those with a higher rate would obviously be the better choice.
