Andy + Polocross= BAD IDEA! (Video)

You have done so well with him KP. No need to tell you to ignore the pathetic individual on this thread. Their comments are insignificant. They may well believe them to be constructive but I am not entirely sure they are aware of your history.....or atleast it comes across that way.

Keep doing what you are doing. Andy is coming along beautifully! :D

Ha ha! It made me laugh how when he span the rest of them would try and spin and scatter too lol, the grey also looked less then amused!
I think he looks nice, he did a spanking extended trot at one point too, he does have good paces :)

He does look very smart, and you can see the improvement!

If you can get him to channel that energy he'd do a cracking dressage test in a few months etc going by some of the 'work,' he does at the end! :)

Well done. :) The bandages do look smart ;)

We had a polocrosse club at school back home, but I have v little coordination at the best of times, never mind factoring in controlling a horse :D I'd love to try it again though, looks fun. :)

Andy is looking good and feeling good by the looks of it :) and you look realy comfortable on him too. I dont know anything about polocross but he looks like he could be good at it if he can get over the ball thing. I like the white bandages as well :)

Thanks for all the supportive comments everyone, I'm glad he is looking and feeling better I am aching a bit today though even though it wasn't a bad fall! :p

I don't think the grey was amused by his antics :p

I can't wait until we do a proper extended trot! I had a lesson today and my instructor told me to ride him forwards and when I went up the diagonal we had a beautiful extended trot! He is such a show off! :)

i'd love to try polocrosse and i think you're very brave! my lad is an exracer too, and we are constantly getting him to forget his high neck carriage.

would there be a danger of the polocrosse undoing all the nice groundwork you are doing to get him working through his back?

I'd be tempted to do it, but i know my guy would just explode with the excitement!

He is lovely!! I really like him and you ride him really well.

Polocrosse looks fun but i have rubbish co-ordination so I very much doubt that I would be any good...still new horsey is arriving on Wednesday so you never know!

Good luck with him I'm sure you are going to have a fab summer!!

Hi, I don't post on here very often, am more of a "background lurker"...
I'll be honest and say when I saw your post with the pictures that caused such controversy a while ago, I was quite shocked myself at his body condition. I can't believe it's the same horse in the video! As a TB owner myself I know it can be a nightmare to keep weight on in winter, let alone put any extra on!! i think you have worked miracles in a very short space of time, so WELL DONE!!!
As for the comments being made regarding anything else concerning your horse, there will always be "experts" that know best.
You can tell from his improvements that you do the absolute best for your horse and you know his needs better than any of us on this forum, so carry on, would love to see more pics once he's been on the spring grass for a week or two!!
Don't know how to put an icon on ( sad I know ) otherwise i would have put a thumbs up on!

Thanks for all the nice comments. For all those wanting to give it a ago but worried about the horse I would say go for it. You never know they might take to it very well and if they don't you just bring them home again. :)

I was a bit worried at first but as it was a one off thing I wasn't too bothered. I think it was nice for him to have some fun and not be asked to work correctly. It must have done him some good though as in my lesson today he was going fab :)

At least there is such a thing as spellcheck.

As far as I am aware, there is not yet a programme available which can change a poisonous and disagreeable character into one representing a pleasant human being.

Oohh looks like alot of fun! You are brave, and are managing him well!
Well done, he's looking alot better than the previous pics you've shown, and we're the summer end of the winter now, so weight wise things can only get even better! :)
Good luck for your future plans with him, looks like you're really enjoying him.

No need for  IMO.

..and if the OP is paying an instructor, then the instructor will say whatever the client wants to hear.
.

Hmmm .....I have had quite a few instructors in my time and to date I have still not managed to be able to pay any of them enough to get them to tell me "what I want to hear", often the opposite in fact !

Thank you :) Yes I am loving him he reminds me so much of my old mounted games pony just a bigger version, and I had so much fun on that pony so I'm hoping the same with him :)

As always, I think Andy is great - you're doing really well with him.

Thank you :)

I have often found this aswell! I also hope that by the time I become a RI I will also be honest with clients.

Oh only just found this, even though it was last saturday!

Firstly i think you need to shorten your standing martingale, as that length is not going to stop a bloody nose!!

To the troll - 99% of stats are made up on the spot, and pretty much ALL polo ponies have a standing martingale / tie down for safety, and pretty sure that they don't all have knackered backs

Anyway back to Andy - I wouldn't give up, I think if you can get someone on the ground repeatedly throwing a ball at him and maybe treats and praise when he ignores it and you'd soon be problem free.

Obviously with that turn of speed he has huge potential, and I wouldn't apply emotions to what he does and doesn't like. At the moment he doesn't understand what on earth is going on, so cannot enjoy it until he twigs what is going on

Did you have a good day there? :)

We had it loose first because he kept flipping out when it was too tight  but we are gradually getting him used to it so we can eventually use it properlly.

I would love to carry it on and as you said I think he will be fab at it but a bit worried it will un-do all the work I've been putting into him. I think there is a nother taster day in April though which we will probably be going to.
I've also just spoke to the DC at my pony club and we're arranging a team :D

Y'know, I think he's a lovely little horse and looks just the type for polox. I'd stick with it K, he could be really really good. That spin out of the line out (if you could catch the ball first ;)) is just what you want him to do! I do lots of other things with my horses off season and I find that the polox makes them more responsive and flexible so I wouldn't worry about undoing any of your work. You could maybe ask one of the pros to have a little go on him? Or even a week intensive work? Once he realises that there is nothing scary he might settle right into it. Also- I have seen horses that start off much worse go on to be super.

P.S 100% of chocolate icecream in this house will be eaten by 6pm today- how's THAT for a statistic?

Where would I send him for a week of intensive work? Would it cost a bomb aswell?
I have a friend at my yard who used to compete at it very well in Africa so might be cheeky and ask her to get on him. Sometimes he would be really good and let the ball get thrown at him then other times he would flip out. He would move everytime I went to pick up the ball which made it difficult.

I might keep trying as I did really enjoy it :)

It looks like you had loads of fun (well apart from the falling off bit-not so fun :) ! )
Im impressed with your coordination catching the ball i could never manage that!!
Well done :)

Send me your details - I know a lovely guy in Glos who might school him for you (and not charge stupid money). I think he is 10 mins from Hartpury.

Also there is training every other weekend at Eldersfield

I agree Andy is doing exactly what you want them to do in a line out, as faster you can get away the better!

I had a lovely time, learnt loads and improved my technique (hopefully), even managed to get to the round robin final and win a box of choccies, so way more success than a BSJA outing!! :D:D

Admire your enthusiasm and courage :D

Takes a lot of guts to place yourself in a situation that is testing courage, especially as you are still rebuilding your own confidence.

We could all learn a thing or too from you on how to rebuild our own confidence levels.....

Andy is looking so much better, there is a vast improvement from the last photos that you posted of him, keep up the good work....I feel quite proud of you.....xx

That fall was so controlled.......love it!!

Andy looks well, going in the right direction and having fun with you.

What else could any little horse ask for?????????????;)

There's usually someone at the training sessions who would be happy to have a little go, our club is a bit far away perhaps as we're in Bucks. JC knows someone close though- try them. Or I know of a couple of people in Warwickshire. You're probably talking £100 or so for a week I expect although it will vary. He's very smart- send him to me if you get bored of him :D

:D :D :D

Kokopelli, Andy looks great! I've always kept a backseat but have read all of your recent threads (in a non stalkery way!). You should be very proud of yourself for ignoring some of the (IMO) harsh critique on here and instead focussing on just you and your pony.

It's a shame he's decided Polocross isn't the game for him - a shame really as you looked very relaxed and coordinated playing it :)

Aw bless him! He was just errrm very up for it :-)

He is looking well, glad you're having fun with him. You never know with a bit of practice he could make an incredibly speedy polocrosse pony.

I don't know the history of Andy, but I think he looks wicked!!

Well done for getting back on him too. Think you're really grown up for being able to recgonise that he wasn't upto the rest of the sessions and pulling him out. I love the excited little trot he does & the white bandages/dead sheep suits him very well!

xoxo

PS ignore the trolls!! xoxo

and if the OP is paying an instructor, then the instructor will say whatever the client wants to hear.

What a load of bull****, instructors are there to give advice, to give points for improvement, and to make CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. As an instructor, I am completely baffled by the fact you thing we say whatever the client wants to hear. If that was the case, how would anyone learn to ride and improve?

On a more positive note, well done Koko, Andy looks SO much better compared with the last photos you put up of him. Whatever you're doing must be working so keep at it :)
