Andy had his xrays today to see if he had KS and to see if that is what is causing him to be so abnormal.

The vet and I both agreed that if there is an issue it will be his withers as this is where the most amount of pain to touch is. Surprisingly the bones in his withers are fine which I was pleased about, but I do think there is some sort of muscle pain going on here.

However, in the area just where the back of the saddle sits and where his back really dips he's got 3 veterbrae touching and others looking very close. One has already fused together so he's most likely had this problem for a fair amount of time. He doesn't seem to have too much pain in this area so vet seems pretty happy about prognosis for now.

He's had some steroid injections. I was a bit concerned about them at first as I was worried they might send him a bit loopy, but the vet said it's highly unlikely as its not like the steroids they eat which do have a tendancy to make horses loopy. He wants me to get on at the weekend and see if it feels happier then we will assess again in a month. Surgery is not an option at this moment and the other vets at the practice also agree with this.

So we're just playing it by year atm, hopefully he'll do well on the steroids.

I want to get a back person out to see him but I have real issues trusting back people as most the ones I know just love getting every penny out of you. Which sort of person should I look for? Mctimoney, physio, chiro etc etc? I've been told ultrasound might be a good option for him? So many to choose from. Also if anyone has any recommendations that will be much appreciated.

So all in all not a bad day, it's nice knowing what is causing the pain and it is manageable with a goodish prognosis if he goes well on the steroids. If not then we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

I've not used him myself but a friend swears by Stuart McGregor for her horse's back and I know he has a very good reputation. I'm think he's in Oxfordshire somewhere but he comes to her in Cardiff so I'm sure Gloucester wouldn't be a problem.
I'm glad it's not as bad as you feared.

This was a question to ask the vets today - as they would have been able to give you a referal.

Thank you for back people suggestions will have a look at them.

Whenever I have the vet out I always forget to ask about something and it just totally slipped my mind. I'm going to ring them soon to find out who they suggest and ask a few other questions. :)

Second Gavin , Im seeing him Thursday for regular treatment for a couple (my choice as one is a big slow growing youngster and i want him to build up correctly and the other has wither over a hand bigger than the middle of his back so gets sore). Pm me if you want more details

Gavin does look very impressive, will speak to the vet in a bit then once I get the go ahead will get in touch. Thank you for the recommendations :)

Hmm, is that the Gavin who sort of doesn't touch the horse as such (ie he will put his hand on a certain place and then claims tobe stimulating certain nerves etc)?

I am a bit sceptical about him to be honest. My sister took her horse to him a couple of times, reckoned he did 'something' and yes you can see the horses responding in some way. However, I took my pony to see him as he'd been having some movement issues. He told me he was a bit sore across his shoulders and that was about it (took about 15 mins). The pony did not improve. He also saw my horse - said he really had no problems. Again, spent only about 15 mins on him. I was still charged £50 for each horse.

As the pony was no better we got our McTimoney guy out and he said he was really sore all down his backand pelvis. He worked on him for probably about 1hr. At the end the pony was visibly more relaxed and withion 2 days he was back to normal and was moving freely. I have only seen really significant results wth my horses from using the McTimoney guy to be honest. Plus, if there's nothing wrong he doesn't charge me the cost - he may do an overall massage/check and that's about £20. A full session is usually £60 but as i have seen the results with my horse previously and my pony I trust that he is doing a good job.

That's what I would advise a physio recommended by the vet and briefed by the vet before seeing the horse.
I am glad the news was more positive than you feared .

Mctimoney. I can't recommend kate cox highly enough. Sorted b1 when she was really bad with slipped disc and a really nice person so easy to have dealings with. Explains everything as she does it.

I had big issues with a mare of mine a few years ago. I had a Physio look at her who did a couple of treatments hen said she was fine. The mare continued to have problems so Gavin was recommended to me. He did his laying on of hands during a couple of sessions and again told me she was fine.

The mare continued to have issues and while I was at the farriers I met a chap called Jose Gomez. He is a Spanish vet as well as an Equine Chiropractor. Again a couple of sessions and this time the mare had amazing results. I have only had to have Jose treat her twice more in the ten years I have had her and this was due to her having a fall. To me Gavin takes your money for a very short session of nothing.
