Hi everyone

my 16.1 WB Mare has been dropping condition recently and i havent been able to get weight on her. Had the vet out who has taken bloods and called yesterday to say she is aneamic (sorry if thats spelt wrong!) She has had a hemo 15 jab, which vet gave her anyway when he came as he said it may help. I am moving yards tomorrow so that she can start to come in at night with ad lib haylege and have 2 feeds a day, and vet said he would hope that this coupled with the hemo 15 will help her to get some weight on and also help with the aneamia. If she isnt picking up in a 2 weeks he has reccomended a supplement from the vet, if she is still no better in a month then a repeat visit will be needed.

has anyone else had experience of this? i never have and would be really interested to hear any ones stories....

Mine lost lots of condition and was found to be anaemic. We gave him equisup (bought from vet, but cheaper online) and that got his iron levels back up

Not sure if this any help, but many years ago my old gelding had the same problem vet said put a bottle of Guiensis (not sure I've spelt that right) in his feed, so I did 1/2 in the morning and the 1/2 at night, but that was 30 years ago. And he was on top form

I think there are a fair few supplements you can feed that may help. The ones I can think of are red cell, kossolian etc. Obviously the best thing to do is to ask your vet. My horse was anaemic when he was young and we fed him blood salts, think that was kossolian or something similar.

Have you had worm egg count done recently?
Have you given autumn tapeworm dose?

Think about adding B vitamins to diet--brewers Yeast

My horse goes anemic very quickly - stress, slight virus, lameness etc.
I gave him one course of equisup and now on NAF enerG or red cell and has been fine since.

i had a mare about 20 years ago that was aneamic, she just went off colour and was stiff too, vet took bloods and it showed up
she was put on stuff called Radiol i think or something like that, it was pink powered stuff had her on double dose for 3 months then down to a lower dose for 3 months and she was fine
i used to use red cell on her after she came off the other supplement

Mine has been on and off aneamic for a year now. We have tried red cell, heamo 15 injections, and all the other things the vet suggested to try. Since moving to my own place with good grass her aneamia is now back to being classes as mild. The whole time looking at her you wouldnt know she had it, not off colour at all still up to no good all the time.

Thanks everyone. Will google those supplements.

Cuffey - her worm count came back clear but vet suggested worming for tapeworm so doing Pramox with new yard owners ponies this weekend.

A good way to increase the Hb is to give an iron supplement for 2 weeks and then give ertythropoetin. The first two weeks is to build up the iron stores followed by the erythropoetin to stimulate red cell production. Giving iron alone is a slower process and takes 6 weeks to 3 months.

Pickle has had this problem on and off for years! at one point he was having 6 weeks "field rest" fairly regularly because of issues putting weight on etc. I always use equisup as an initial boost (he has also had vet prescribed medications in the past when it was very bad but don't know name) Vets also recommended aloe vera juice!

I now keep him on an all round multi vitamin supplement that contains iron! and now have a horse who in fact managed to get fat for a change this year!
