Just seen a poor little Border Terrier get hit by a truck! The truck driver braked but after hitting the dog, put his foot down and drove off! There was damage to his truck too. I stopped my car and fiancé who was behind me pulled over. The dog got up and ran past my car barking. From what I could see, it was holding it's leg up and it's bum was quite high in the air. Dog also had a collar. We spent 20 mins or so looking for it until I had to come home with daughter? Fiancé continued to look in hedges etc with torch but nothing.

Have called council and no answer....obviously being weekend. Called RSPCA ( in sheer desperation) who wouldn't come out unless dog was dead. Also notified police who understandably couldn't do much. Not sure what else we can do?

Poor thing. No sleep for me tonight. OH has said he may go back and continue to look.

Hopefully it will make it's way home or at least be found by a kindly person. My cat hid when he got hit by a car a few months ago (not far from the road, so the person who hit him could have found him if they'd stopped and looked ) but when my mum went looking for him she had no idea where he might be and only found him because he knows his name and miaowed when he heard her calling. He'd been there all night unable to move :(. However, he's been very lucky so hopefully this dog will be too!

Did you get the reg off the truck?
It is illegal not to stop after hitting a dog. What a b*stard!!

Hope the little dog finds his way home :(.

As long as the police recorded it, if anyone calls reporting it as lost (and as it was wearing a collar the chances are quite high that they will) the police will at least be able to give them some info and possibly pass their number to you for further assistance?

Didn't get reg of the truck as was too busy slamming my brakes on. All happened so quick!

I told the police that the driver failed to stop despite half their bumper coming off and almost hitting my car!

OH is back out looking. I pray someone finds the poor thing.

Poor dog. I hope it's alright. At least there are still SOME considerate and kind hearted people left in the world! Shame the same can't be said about the truck driver :(

Hope your OH finds the dog and we get an update with a happy ending!

OH couldn't find it. Unfortunately the road is surrounded by fields and a river. The dog was clearly frightened so I presume it kept running for a while. I am going back out in a bit to have another look.

Typical response from RSPCA - if there had been a TV camera crew about they'd have been over like a shot.

I'm surprised such a small dog got up after being hit by a truck although as he did lets hope he ran home where he'll get some help.

Fingers crossed for him/her.

I know that this will strike a sour note with some prople, but the blame lies with the owners of the dog. I hate loose dogs on the road, they cause accidents if people swerve or brake sharply to avoid them. If the dog caused damage to the truck, then they need to think themselves fortunate that the truck driver isn't looking for them!

Just been out looking again and nothing. No one walking around looking for dog either so no idea where is may have come from.

Just really want to know it's ok. Struggling to find a 24 hour vet in the area to call too.

I will be out in the morning having another look.

For now, I hope he is safe and not in too much pain. :(

Poor little mite, i hope it's okay. Fingers crossed
Stupid, total and utter d*ckweed of a truck driver, I hope someone runs him over with a truck then drives off and sees how he likes it! What an idiot :/

Thank heavens for people like yourself and your OH who care. It restores some faith in humans. Might be worth seeing if the local paper will put something in. And on Monday morning there may well be someone going into a local garage to have a bumper fixed! Well done you both

Might also be worth checking with the local dog warden to either get peace of mind that it's been found/handed in or to give them a heads up in case it turns up with them later. Ours has an out of hours/weekends contact number (on our local council website), maybe yours has too.

You've done much more so far than a lot of folk would. Hope the poor mite is located and is ok

Poor dog! I get really frustrated that the likes of the RSPCA won't go out unless it's dead. It's a bit late then! Recently the SSPCA made a very half-hearted attempt to catch a dog that had been dumped and then hit by a car. Luckily people from a wildlife rescue place went to it's aid. Attempts had been made by some elderly local people to catch it. :(

I saw a cat get hit by a car a while back, it got hit pretty hard and bounced off the bumper. The girl did stop (very upset) and we, together with a neighbour, looked for the cat. I eventually found it, and it was fine, despite the bump - I was amazed at the lack of injury. So fingers crossed that the dog came off OK.

It's not always the owners fault that a dog gets on the loose.

I had one that was an incredible Houdini - I got him 3rd hand and he already had a reputaion with the local council. He climbed fences - even manageing to climb chicken wire sized netting. When he had it in his mind to depart - he did!

OH was out again at 4.30am looking for dog. Needless to say, we both didn't get much sleep.

I have called all of the people I can think of and no one able to help so late at night. Will call local vets and warden in morning. Am hoping someone has found the dog and is caring for it until it can be collected. We just really want to know it is ok. It was really frightened. :(

what a shame poor dog. Hope you got trucks reg its illegal to drive off after hitting a dog, dead or alive.
My dad saw a lab get hit by a car a few weeks back and he organised the cars etc to get the dog to the vet and he said the number of people who stopped and offered to drive dog to vet, drive family to vets etc was incredible. Some people out there do have feelings!
Also it is illegal for a vet to not treat an animal in an accident even if the owner cant afford to pay, so if you do find the dog take it to the vet you wont have to foot the bill! It is a hypocratic oath

I'm not defending the truck driver because if he thought there was a chance he'd hit something he should have stopped. Having said that, if he didn't see the little dog and he was in a big truck he may not have felt it.

Hope you've had good news about the dog?

We never found the dog, despite looking for two days.

The driver knew what he had done as he more or less stopped then drove off.

Hopefully dog wasn't too hurt and found his way home.

Hopefully it'll have run back to its owner. Stupid owners for letting it be loose! Could have caused a serious accident - I ran over a dog whilst I was doing my motorcycle training, a big golden retriever too! I wasnt experienced enough to react and glad I didnt or I would have swerved straight into an oncoming car. Dog ran off, no idea if it was ok or not.

Poor dog =[

Reminds me of when mine was hit by a car! He was a rescue, a complete nutcase, so was never allowed off his lead on walks. He was playing with our other dog, somehow lead clip came undone, he ran into road, as a car came round the corner. He's only a tiny terrior, car was only going 15mph max, and he still had 2 have 2 operations, 1 because he had ruptured something, the other because his inside were coming out through the internal stitches =[

That was only 6-7 months ago now, and hes barely even got a scar [=

Its so horrible when they get lose, but you cant always blame the owner. Poor guy that hit him was devasted, we went round after with beer to apologise and tell him how he was [=

Good job there are kind caring people likes yourselves left in the world!
