Some of you might remember my post on the angry dad and his son on the mini-moto using the bridleway/footpath? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Well, last night I went to walk my dog on the footpath and noticed that the track has been completly cut up, covered in tyre marks and is really muddy. In the distance I could see a man on a trail bike. As he got closer he slowed down, I've not seen him before locally and he was quite a rough looking type in dirty clothes. I actually thought twice about speaking to him as he looked quite menacing and after the earful I got from angry dad I was quite wary, plus I was on my own in the middle of the country side.

But as he slowed up I thought bu**er it I have to say something. So I explained politely that this was a permissive bridle way and that it was illeagl to use a motor bike on it and it was cutting up the track. I couldn't have been more surprised by the response. He said how sorry he was, that he didn't know, he was so polite he even asked if I minded if he went to the other side of the field where he had left his bag!!!! He drove off and I continued my walk, I caught up with him collecting his belongings and he again apologised made a fuss of the dog said sorry again and left!

What a breath of fresh air compared to angry dad! I suppose it's a case of not judging a book by it's cover.

I am perusing with the council, police and access officer to get something more permanent done to stop motorbikes using the track.

Hurrah! There are some lovely people about!
Have you considered reporting it to your council and see if you can ask them to visit when they are there, if it's normally the same sort of time?

I have met the same sort of blokes, they are usually eastern europeans, who think they can ride a motorbike anywhere

how lovely.

theres a young lad (18/19) who lives near me who drives a subaru impreza, really big exhaust, massive alloys etc.
first time i met him out hacking i thought.."here we go, he's never going to slow down".....well not only did he slow right down, he switched his radio off and let the car idle past so no noisy exhaust.....and has done this every time we've met since.

cant judge a book by its cover indeed.

I know what you mean. I was hacking on a narrow country road near my yard on sat. The soccer mom with the kids in the back that I expected to slow down didn't at all. She went flying past.
Then later a young guy in his zupped up toyota (with customary spoiler) came round the corner and slowed right down to a crawl.
He got a big smile and a thank you wave. You can never judge from appearance who is polite.

It is wonderful; when someone is considerate, just makes your day.

Some of the most considerate road users with horses are those on motorbikes - virtually all those round us slow right down to pass and are really helpful. Likewise the lorries - professional drivewrs understand how unpredictable horses can be. The worst drivers by far are the mothers on the school run - who are desparate not to slow down at all (and all seem to drive huge 4x4 with the precious children in, and dont seem to understand how much of the road they take up....)

We have a few byways round the village which are useless for horses, mainly due to being too stony, but are popular with trials bikers. I always find them the most polite & considerate road users & am generally pleased to see them, they also enjoy the countryside.
The rudest people I meet are those on their way to church on a Sunday morning who refuse to acknowledge your presence, and occasionally a rabid commuter.

yep, motorbikers round my way are all fab too, they get big smiles and waves (along with subaru driver!!!).

i can never understand why farmers are so lax about slowing down/giving us room...ok, tractors have overtaken the horse in farming terms but they've got *rural knowledge* and MUST understand how scary they can be to horses?????

Oooh don't get me started on the self righteous, tunnel visioned, fundamentalist, anti-social, selfish, grrrrrrr I'm gonna burst a blood vessel in a minute. If you ever have a go at them for it the torrent of abuse that streams out of the car window is just priceless. They are NEVER wrong. Wrong things happen to them but it's never their fault. I'll calm down in a minute. Trouble is it's too late to remove them from the gene pool.

Here's a surprise - one of the most considerate are the old dears in their automatic micras - you know the type - look through the gap between the steering wheel and the dashboard. Amount of times I've had them slow right down, give me a wide berth and then cheerily give me a wave once they are past. Like a breath of fresh air. Utterly different to when you have to follow them in your own car...
