Just wondering what people would actually do in this situation.

If you witnessed an animal being abused would you

ignore it

go over and attempt to rescue the poor thing

or only go over when someone else already has

The reason i ask is that a poor German Shepard puppy had its head bashed on the pavement by a couple of youths outside Coventry magistrates yesterday and no one took any niotice !!!! and guess what the cctv outside the court house was broken :-/

Personally i would not be able to ignore such an act and would go over and put a stop to it, just instinct i think with some people, but how can that sort of action be ignored, unbelieveable !!!!!

story here for those that are interested

I would like to think I would go over and say something, given the situation was safe.

A couple of years ago I saw a man hitting and screaming at his dog when he was at a petrol station. I was the only other customer there in a very dodgy area late at night. He was a very big bloke (height and girth!) and I am 5'1, I'm ashamed to say that I was too scared to say anything to him. I took his reg and called the non emergency police number and told them about the dog and that he seemed drunk and reckless. They told me I did the right thing.

i have to say in todays society i would weigh up the situation very carefully before i got involved, be it animal abuse or between people:(. no point in putting yourself in danger and possibly aggravating the situation if you are not sure you can look after yourself if the aggression is then redirected at you.
I have stepped in when a group of kids were pinning a smaller child down and intimidating him, i got a gobfull of abuse as expected but i didn't feel i had put myself in danger.
i was attacked outside a crowded post office by a woman who owed me money! (she didn't want to pay so thought that beating me up would shut me up) not a single person in the post office did a thing, just watched or looked away, i was angry at the time at the lack of help but now i understand why people are so worried about getting involved, they are too scared of the possible repercussions:(

Id probley go over yelling what the hell do they think they were doing.Have phone out with the number of the police ready to go.
Have intervened in the past when I seen a younger boy being beaten up by older teenagers.Scary at the time but they turned out to be absolute cowards when confronted.

Id be much more likley to intervene when its animal abuse or a dispute between kids/teenagers than an adult arguement though.

I'd go over and say something.

sod that for a laugh, with todays youth will end up with your head being bashed on the pavement, As harsh as it is, i would film it, and then go to authoritorys that way its filmed! and evidence to have them prosocuted

I hate saying that to just leave it, but as much as i know i would fly at them thats the best way to resolve the issue.

I'd definately say something. BUT I'd think twice if I saw some dodgy looking youths doing this down some back alley with nobody else around... I think I'd have to grab any nearby person or knock on someones door so I'd have help. Always wary of youths, never know what their carrying! I certainly couldnt ignore the situation though and cant understand those who do.

Logically I know I should call the proper authorities. It helps no one if I get myself attacked. However I have waded in, invariably where staffords are involved and suffered no harm yet. I think that these people do not expect a reasonably well spoken small blonde to accost and shame them. Not something I recommend though.

I know exactly where you're coming from. But I can't keep my mouth shut (no surprise there).

Had a major run in last week with a guy who thought it was acceptable to yank his dog's lead to 'heal' with every stride, when his beautiful dog was walking quietly and meekly by his side......

I would go over. I saw a woman whipping her dog with the lead and not just one strike but a real bashing. The poor dog was cowed to the ground. I shouted to her to stop it then marched over. Didn`t think. Fortunately the woman was at least a little inebriated so after giving me a mouthful of abuse, she walked on. Wonder what kind of a life that poor dog has at home? :(

I would imagine most people would believe they would intervene... In truth though most would not - particularly when there is a group of witnesses...

The Bystander Effect is a fairly well recognised social psychological issue coined after the rape and murder of Kitty Genovese... The more people around, the less likely an individual will get involved... It's been done to death experiment wise and offers a somewhat unpalatable view of how we behave in numbers... We're more likely to help when on our own and have no other people around to 'pass responsibility' to...

If i had people Round, id have stepped in and pointed out they were on cctv in the hope i wouldnt get my head stoved in, id have given them the option of handing over the dog or me calling the police on them for animal cruelty, using the cctv camera as evidence .... Hoping they didnt know it wasnt working.
As a young girl ... 35 yrs ago now, a friend and i were sitting on a wall watching 2 clydesdales in their field when we saw 2 boys walking over to them, we thought they were going to pat them then noticed they were spraying them with green paint , we were so mad that we went over to them, and we ended up fighting with them and we gave them a bloody good hiding for it, they were so embarrassed to have been beaten up by 2 girls they never said any more about it to anyone. ;)

When something makes me angry, i turn in to the incredable hulk, i would have taken the pair of them on, then snatched the dog off them.

In ^that^ situation I'd have been livid and would definitely have said something. Normally I tend to keep my mouth shut and keep my opinions to myself, but when it comes to animal abuse I cannot and will not tolerate it. The main problem is when people don't always agree over what counts as abuse in the first place.
