Hi,

I've had a stubborn abscess eventually burst, after wet poulticing. Can anyone tell me how Animalintex works? Does wet poulticing soften the sole and help the abscess to break through? As soon as it has broken through should you then dry poultice ? Does dry poulticing still draw the abscess out? Does anyone know?

Usually there is an info sheet inside the packet. I've always use a warm poultice to draw the infection out unrolled no more puss comes out. Then a dry one for a few days.
 
you could try sugadine! which is basically a combination of sugar and iodine , the sugar draws it out and the iodine treats it! the vets usually have some made up or you can make your own ,!
 
My OH works for the people that make Animalintex, and says it will draw an abcess whether you use it wet or dry, but it's the heat from the wet application that can make a difference.
 
Continuous poulticing leads to wet, soft, cheesy feet. My vet says to wet poultice for no more than 48 hours, then dry poultice for as long as it takes to drain the abcess.
 
Animalintex is has Boric Acid in it .. with tragacanth which creates a sticky gel type substance when wet and is good for holding the Boric Acid in..

Boric Acid is good for drawing infection... you can also use nappies and salt or get some boric acid from chemist.
 
Lots and lots of advice here thanks, if there was still a bit of gunk left in would a dry poultice still draw it out.? There is no heat and he isn't lame but I'm still not sure it's all out, I mentioned it to the vet today and he advised me to dry poultice. Argh....
 
my farrier said to wet poultice for 5 days and then dry poultice??!! am majorly confused now as this is what I've done with both abscesses??
 
Your lucky i have been poulticing twice a week for over a week still the abscess hasnt burst.


This is what i was taught doing my BHS exams
wet Animalintex works by soaking up mucks and pus as well as drawing out the infection.

dry Animalintex works by soaking up infections as well as drawing out infection , the wet heat aids the drawing out process

I would hot tub the foot 15 mins with Epsom salts then put wet poultice for the first day to start the draining poultice then switch to a dry poultice one, unless there is still loads of pus coming out , in which case when you take the foot out the tub place it on a old towel which will in turn dry the sole then put hoof hardener on before you put the wet or dry Animalintex over the actually draining hole


what i am doing is hot tubbing then drying the foot putting hoof hardner on then the Animalintex then the nappy with vet wrap then duck tape over .

Hot Animalintex is generally used for cuts leg punctures etc to draw out infections dirt debris.But also with punctured soles :)
