Ankle Ligaments

Hey!

I ruptured 2 of the 3 in a football accident, and had to have an op to have my ankle reconstructed.

It's never been quite the same since, and does hurt when I ride. I also find I get cramp on the outside of my calf on that leg when I ride.

Make sure you do your physio!

i had a year out before I could even play footie again, and it was 6 weeks on crutches and 6 months before I could jog again, so it was pretty bad really.

Unfortunately yes.

Go find a physio asap and do exercises as instructed.

I couldn't do rising trot for 3 mths, and it was about 6 months before i fully trusted the ankle. my travel insurance wouldn't cover that ankle for 2 yrs so had to take out specialist insurance.

just as well I'm not a horse - reckon the whole leg would have been excluded for life!

Did mine in June. Doctor advised rest for as long as possible - WAS WRONG!!! I developped a lot of scar tissue, could not point, flex or twist inwards my foot for weeks (could not drive, ride and walked with a limp). Went to physio who recommended specific exercises every two hours (fairly painful!), but now much better. He said it will take up to six months from the injury before it's 100%.

I would strongly recommend you see a physio asap! Feel better soon!

Mines wierd, it hurts when I press where they are, but if I can keep my ankle upright (hard when its week) its not too painfull!!! but ive got a very strange lump which has appeared so am going to go to my GP in the morning if only to get refered for physio!

Did mine a few months ago, thought Id broken it at the time as the pain was awful. 3 weeks later thought it didnt feel too bad and went over on it again. Its about 12 weeks now, I can wear heels again but it still hurts if I try to flex it sideways. Mine was swollen for weeks on the outside near my anke bone and it hurt to touch. I was told to strap it up with a vet wrap! Reading the other replies, I dont think mine must have been too bad but it still hurt like mad

I damaged my ankle nearly 10 years ago. It has never recovered properly and a chronic pain condition has developed in it. The injury meant that I had to leave the teaching job I loved and have been unable to work ever since. I have been treated at RNOH Stanmore. I hope your injury heals quickly. Please follow medical advise to the letter.

Yep I did the ligament that runs underneath the ankle joint last year

I was still able to ride but did a lot of riding either without stirrups or with very long stirrups to minimise pressure on ankle. Didn't jump for a good 3 months. Bought a pair of Sprenger stirrups which are fantastic and really help to absorb the concussion that normally your ankles would. My ankle still isn't right 18 months on but with the Sprengers I ride normally now and am back jumping

ETA: Physio is a good idea, go see your doctor about it and they should refer you asap. We're lucky that our surgery has a resident physio but when I needed physio in Southampton where I used to live, gp wrote a referral to hospital which takes a while, so get onto them asap!

Did the ligaments in my left ankle over 7 years ago and have had four courses of physio, appointments with podiatrists etc and it will never be the same again. It swells if it's 'over-worked' and I get cramps up the inside of my leg. Physio recommended no/very limited high impact activities, e.g. running. I manage to ride just fine though :-)

I am the world's worst patient and found it impossible to sit still and rest when I'd done it - I was back at work after three days even though the docs recommended full rest for at least 6 weeks so don't think I did it any favours. Please just listen to your docs and try to do exactly as they say!!!

Also tore my ankle ligaments (anterior and lateral maybe?? I forget) about 4 years ago. I still get pain in it now - I also get strange cramps in my toes, my toes go numb sometimes when I ride and I get pain in my foot sometimes rather than my ankle.

I was told to use the ankle to walk as much as I could as you need to keep the ligaments moving when they heal. I think it's to do with the ligaments strengthening up but not healing too short...or something like that. However, he said it must be kept elevated when I was resting - including in bed but I couldn't bear to even have the duvet over the top of it so it used to get very cold on a pile of cushions outside the duvet! To help with bruising and swelling (the doctor remarked he'd "never seen one that black"), he said to alternate an ice pack for 10 mins than a hot water bottle for 10 mins.

I was riding 2 weeks after but with long stirrups out hacking and no stirrups in the school. Doctor said a minimum of a month of no riding...hmmm. I now have Sprenger stirrups and that's helped with the numb toes and aches in my ankle/foot.

It was a different shape to the other but then my youngster went and bucked me off earlier this year and my left ankle (other one) got caught through the reins. He promptly dragged me round the arena by my ankle and reared twice lifting me off the ground so I think it's evened up!

i snapped mine when i was about 13. spent 6 months on crutches and had tonnes of physio (it was painful at first but great fun as involved jumping around on a trampoline!!). its still a little swollen now and i am 28!! however, and i am touching wood here, not had another problem with that ankle since- it cracks a lot but i don't sprain it all the time anymore like i used to as a kid so clearly the physio worked! definitely do your exercises!
