Broke my ankle badly last April, had it pinned & plated, anyway, it still does not have full range of movement, have had loads of physio but when I ride I still can't get my weight down into my right heel enough, so I am not properly balanced, & I feel a bit loose in the saddle when I jump. Have an operation booked for the 13th March to have the plates removed as they are now very prominent & sore, also it seems that the metal work is restricting the movement, but as I missed almost all last summer competing, I don't know whether to go ahead, as apparently should be back riding in a couple of weeks, or wait till after the season & put up with the pain till then. Anyone else had this done?? How was it?? Thanks.

Hi - I had pins & plates taken out of my tibia & fibula (leading into the ankle) after they had been in for just short of 10 years. The heads had become prominent and were rubbing.

After the op to take them out, had staples removed after a fortnight and the leg was still very sore & swollen.

Was able to tolerate driving after 3 weeks and rode after 6 weeks. Was extremely sore and swelled up again then after another week, managed rising trot.

Op was at the end of Feb and I was ready for my first event beginning of June - Fortunately, the Northern season kicks off later than the South!

If I were you, I would go ahead and get it over with - it is much easier hobbling about in the lighter nights than at the end of the season when it is dark and gloomy.
