After 14 weeks of being potted up I got my pot off on Thursday

It scares me, I want it back on lol! I have now got an ankle splint to wear for support. But still not allowed to weight bear for another 2 weeks yet!

I had my first session of physio on Friday. It didn't go too bad, didn't over do it. The lady said my foot would be sore, ache and swell with it being manipulated after a 14 week stint of not moving. Amazingly, it didn't!

Feeling rather smug, and it will teach me because.....

oh boy does it ache today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I appreciate this will be the case for a l-o-n-g time!

She gave me exercises to do, 3 times a day. Do you think I should do any today
confused.gif
continue with exercises even though it hurts
confused.gif
I'm scared to over do it too soon
confused.gif

Or do you think I should stir clear today and rest it... exercises tomorrow

Yes, I would do the exercises if you were told to - it may be sore but you have to do the exercises if you want anylong term improvment

anyways, horsey people are hardy people!

Physio does hurt im afraid

I have a long term ankle problem and have been treated at Stanmore. If the physio gave you a baseline of exercises (ie the lowest number to do) I would do that amount on a bad day and more on a less painful one. I hope your treatment goes well.

She gave me a long rubber fitness band to do exercises with. I have to move my ankle to where I can, and then using the rubber, put a little more pull on it, hold it for 30 seconds.

Said to pull my toes towards me, then point toes down, turn foot out, and turn it in, each for 30 seconds, 10 times each, in that order, and do that exercise as a whole 3 times a day.

She didn't give me any other advice or higher/lower limits to work to.

I'm just scared of pushing myself too far and having to start from scratch again

My surgeon has warned me that when I start weight bearing my talus could collapse and crumble as it is the small bone in your ankle region that takes your full body weight, and I split it into four! I just panic I guess

Me thinks it is time to raid my drugs goody bag and have some pain relief lol

Paracetamol anyone lol xx

just do what you can, it won't let you move it where it can't so start of just doing it all a little bit and then push it a bit further over the next few days, its better to start doing something but not go at it like a bull in a china shop.

I haven't had any official physio for my elbow yet but have been doing as much as I am happy to do on my own and the movement and strength has improved lots even though I could barely move it in the first instance.

Yes, do the exercises but gently.

After my first few sessions I was in agony afterwards. Used to lay in bed some nights and writhe in pain. Thought it was never going to get better. I often wondered what on Earth I was doing, keep on going to the physio sessions. I felt like a masochist!

But it DOES get better. I am 18 months on from where you are now and I can honestly say I am 100% fine now. Never thought I'd get here, but I have. No pain during the day and only very occasionally when I flex my ankle to point the toe. The important thing is to get your balance back and practice using the whole foot properly when you move. But that's for later on, when you're properly back on your feet and feeling a lot more comfortable.

Thanks for that, I appreciate it loads

I've never broken anything before **touch wood** and so I am out of my depths with it all! I am trying not to be too optimistic, nor the ultimate pessimist, but attempting to be a careful realist lol!

I am doing everything my surgeon says, I'd like to be a success story for him! He said he had only seen talus split in half and that's serious enough, never mind in quarters!
shocked.gif

He's really drummed it into to me that even at this stage, everything could go wrong for me. I think that's why he is holding off the weight bearing. Initially I was told I would start 8 - 12 weeks weight bearing after my original operation.

After 9 weeks my main wound split open and the metal work was on show. So they had to remove a plate in my fibula 18 months early. Another set back from weight bearing.

But hey ho, I want to get it right, and not risk further operations and starting from scratch! These things take time xxxx

I cracked my elbow when I was 14 when my horse fell with me on the road. I wasn't able to have it potted, something to do with it being a joint (can't quite remember now
confused.gif
) just strapped up. Was off on holiday for 2 weeks in Bali the next day after my accident!!
shocked.gif
My parents were really amused....not!!!

On holiday the swimming pool did absolute wonders for me! The water took the weight of my arm, and I was able to concentrate on flexing it. Something about the warm sun and water.... very therapeutic.

Once I get the go ahead from my surgeon, that's my plan for my ankle... swimming!
