Reining is great fun, definitely recommend it

It's actually very similar to dressage believe it or not! Anky did a good job, although its not actually the first time she's tried it. Riecky Young, who rides for Holland was a dressage rider before choosing reining.
On a trained horse, it's great fun (altho like a dressage schoolmaster the seasoned horses are usually very cheeky

) Training a green horse to that level requires a lot of skill.
There's not much time for yee-haaing, trust me

I think it would be great to see a WEG level rider competing in two different disciplines but I'd say from that video clip that Anky's got her work cut out to cut it in the reining arena against today's pro talent.

As a Western rider but a non-reiner, I'd say reining is a very difficult sport to get under the bonnet of, the maneoeuvres look so straightforward but I've nothing but admiration for those that can make it look so easy - long way to go before I can consider even attempting a two-handed 'Green as Grass' version...

great that she is giving it a go. Reining is one of those things that look easy....until you do it! Training a horse to the top level takes a very talented trainer and rider so it would be quite incredible for someone to be at the top of their game in two such diverse disciplines as dressage and reining.

Yikes Anky!!! dont give up your day job just yet!!!

just goes to show ...You can take a horse to water but you carn't make him rein.... imho modern dresage is very mecanical and forced which is the opposit of what you need for a sucsessfull reining "run" I love reining because done well its clasical horsemanship at its finest..

i think anky did a great job at the reining as it is very similar to dressage only at a quicker speed. reining is very skillfull and you have to have maximum control over every part of your horses body i.e be able to move each hip over, shoulders over it also is a way of riding that is based on wanting the biggest response from your horse on the slightest que. anky took to the western pretty well all though she would need to lose the english posture a little and learn to use voice command and seat when asking for the sliding stop as you dont achieve this from pulling the horse in the mouth when showing i dont think she will be ready to compete against the pro reiners in 2010 as they are world class and have been doing the reining for many years but it would be interesting to see how quickly she could adapt and ride reining to the same high standard as her dressage.

i was an english rider and very critical towards western riding as i thought just be a bunch of people who like to dress up on horses which are pretty much donkeys ....i was wrong!! the horses are athletic, quick but easy to train and the style of riding when done properly and seriously to competition standard is exilirating to have that amount of control over your horse to perform amazing skills at a high speed it is the wow factor i defiantly would recommend anyone to have a go even just to educate all you dedicated riders to the different styles of riding around the world and the differnt breeds of horse! i have not looked back since i gave reining a go and i was the biggest skeptic towards this sport.
take a look at our pro riders like shaun flarida on you tube!
and if you fancy giving reining a go there are mnay places around uk; i highly recommend david deptford based in cambridge at sovereign quarter horses.

As a professional Anky did herself proud and I am sure that she would admit that there is room for improvement in her performance. If a celebrity like Anky feels there is merit in riding a western trained horse then perhaps the doubters out there should give it a go before writing it off as " just a bunch of cowboys " It's certainly is not as easy as the pro's make it look and the adrenalin rush on a run-down is awesome!!!!
At the end of the day we are all equestrians aren't we? and as such we should support each others disciplines and riders willing to cross from one discipline to another.

I'm surprised that no one at all has commented on her effect on the horses mouth. Poor horse.

I don't think anyone should be derogatory about reining, even if they're into dressage - cross training is always useful. I find watching all disciplines useful - there is always something to be taken away & applied to your own riding.

I think fair play for her to have a go - does go to show she has an unbiased opinion of Western Riding unlike some people I speak to.

Keep at it Anky would love to see you show the sceptics what it's all about.
