Went to the ID breed show today in open workers. In the schedule it said the fences were 3'6, could cope fine with that. When walking the course all the fences measured up to my belly button at least. The course seemed huge and I was so nervous. The grass was really short and the ground was extremely hard and I retired him after the first three fences because he was slipping into them and really didn't seem happy with the ground/ height. Just got home and measured the height of my belly button with a tape measure and it's 4'1"!! Would never have entered him in a class this height. Just really annoyed they made the fences higher than it said in the schedule and should have made a complaint at the time but was quite upset.

ben and jerry's chocolate fudge brownie for anyone that's read my rant!

Sorry you have had a rubbish day. You did the right thing retiring him if he was slipping, however at this time of year I think you have to sometimes consider that the ground may be hard and that you will certainly need studs when jumping on grass.

Also you must be tall! I am touching 6ft and my belly button is a lot less than 4'11"! 3'6" is a fairly standard open workers course height.

Yeah I guess it's just one of those things, one weekend will be fab and the next not so much. I saw a few people go round and absolutely trash the course because their horses just couldn't get any grip. 4'1" not 4'11!! But I am very tall yes. I'd have been happy with 3'6" but so annoyed the course builder got too ambitious and made them higher

Ooops, sorry! Tbh I would expect a few inches difference either way of the height - but I know how disappointing it can be when you put the effort in, in preparation and on the day.

Yeah Im not that much of a giant :D I know, oh well! Ill stop wallowing tomorrow and pull myself together haha!

Pity me...2'6" starts to seem big when I realise it's half an inch under being half my height!

It's irritating when the jumps aren't the size they are meant to be.

Haha would so much rather be small trust me! So annoying, spent a lot of time and money getting to today and I know the ground was c*** but really think we could have done it if the height was correct.

End of summer you might expect hard ground. Did you forget your studs?

If you didn't bother making a complaint at the time, when the course could have been checked and measured, and something done about it, theres not much point moaning about it on here, where your guesstimation of the heights cannot be verified.

I would have gone straight to the secretary tent after walking the course, and asked for a remeasure in accordance with the height stated in the schedule. They would have adjusted the course I am sure.

I sympathise with the slipping, but I suspect he/she would also have slipped at 3'6" without studs on hard going.

Others replying have more experience and have no doubt given you the correct response but I just wanted to say you have my sympathy! Rubbish when you get all ready and go out and stuff like that happens. Next time take a tape measure with you and wave it at the stewards if the same thing happens! Well done for retiring anyway, saved your horse for another day. Hope you have a better experience next time. :)

I was there with my horse (not in the WH) and I thought the jumps looked big too! I was also disappointed with the show, but for different reasons, which is a shame as I had been looking forward to going too.

I had a terrible time slipping eventing this weekend and it is so distracting. However I do agree an open WH course at 3'6 is usually pretty meaty. If you haven't done many they do seem massive and wide but they usually jump easily enough. There is always next time and I'd do a few novices if I were you as well, they're such good prep for the massive open classes.

Thread was knackered in one of them and I was rushing from another class so couldn't put them in.

I'm not especially moaning was just upset last night but thanks for the sympathy anyway!

I guess it's just intimidating at a big show to go up and demand they take the jumps down but in hindsight I wish I'd said something

I know, compared to other years this year really did not compare! Hopefully will be better next year.

I'm with Tobiano on this one, that was rubbish luck, hope your next time out is better!

Thanks you two, that's what showing is about anyway! :D

I'm 5'4" and my belly button is just below my waist height which is what I used to gauge 3'6" at. My chest is 4'4" which was my school high jump personal best!

I remember going to one RS show and the judge was a HOYS WH competitor herself and built the open course to 3' minimum with nice solid fences - and half the competitors complained that it was "only RS" and it wasn't fair. They had forgotten that it was also a qualifier for a local Championship show and the fences there would have all have been up to full height.
