I have my pony on loan and hes kept at the yard his owner is at with her other horse. The owner is really starting to annoy me as she has given her other horse a massive bed which is going to last forever, but has given Ted a teeny bed and then moans when I put a new bale in :/ Also shes decided that to "save bedding" that she is going to deep litter his bed, although after two days of doing this the wet was showing on top so I took it out. Now every time she mucks him out I go up and take the wet out and turn the whole bed so the shavings dont become compact so he has as much bedding as possible. Also .. hes quite fat and is in a field full of grass (she wont let me have a grazing muzzle on him) he has a huge amount of hay at night and is fed two scoops (the small rectangular ones) of Saracen Recoup (which we feed to the racehorses on boxrest) and then tells everyone that "hes on rations and is still fat" ... hes only 12.2hh (ish) and I really dont think he needs that much of that feed .. but theres no telling her ... Anyway , rant over, anything you guys would do?

I really want to, but she once said "you can loan him forever and ever but ill never sell him" dont know if she meant it or she was saying it to act as if she cares but as soon as someone throws money at her for him she'll sell him. Plus I dont have enough money together yet to buy him and look after him after :/ am starting driving lessons soon too

I feel your pain! I used to keep my two at my loan horse's owners yard. I had my loan horse and my home bred youngster at her yard and she was always interfering and being annoying! My boyfriend took me on a suprise holiday a few years ago (only 3 days) and I asked her if she could muck out my two (she had to do the rest of her yard so 2 more was not a lot to ask seen as I regularly mucked out all of her 6!) Anyway got back to find she hadn't mucked out either of them for the whole time i'd been away. I think she just sent her husband (none horsey) down to feed them! This lady is honestly a nightmare, the amount of things she has done over the years would take me a whole day to write down! Anyway I resolved this by moving them both to another yard, it's only ten mins down the road but on the new yard they are my horses and I do as I wish with them, no annoying owners to interfer! She hardly ever asks about her horse, he was her daughters and she is now left with all there ponies and horses from 10 years ago, ranging from 12hh to 16.2hh! I get a text once a month from her to ask how we all are and thats it! Freedom! x

Be careful of being critical of your loan pony's owner on here, it could easily get back to them and if they are upset they could end the loan.

Plus if the owner is paying for the bedding, its not even really a proper loan and its entirely up to them how much to use. Try not to stress and just enjoy spending time with Ted.

If you have him on full and proper loan, the owner shouldn't interfere unless you are doing something that is dangerous to her horse or others around it.

But with that comes full responsibility, ie full livery costs, vet fees, shoeing costs the lot.

It really depends on the arrangement you have.
Most loan problems are also due to lack of communication, have you tried talking to her, you can do this in a non critical way.

Good luck anyway x

Just be aware hun that a proper deep litter bed is a delight. It is deep and fragrant and warm for the horse to lie on. But if you keep digging it up and taking the wet out it will NEVER form the proper base that is necessary for a deep litter bed. Whatever your private arrangements are with the owner, if it was me and I remained responsible for the pony's bed I'd be boiling mad at your daily sabotages! You need to talk it out with her or it will never work long term!

It does seem strange that she would skimp on bedding but not on hay. Hay is more expensive than straw. She obviously hasn't given up on him if she's feeding him well.

As others have said, when you have one on loan, usually you pay for everything.

Deep litter beds are meant to be compact - and by turning it you run the risk of him going through the bed to the floor.

However, as the pony is on loan - and you foot the bill for everything - why does it matter how much bedding you want to put down?

Just put down as many bales as you can afford a week. Ditto the feed. You're paying for the feed, so reduce the amount you feed until you are happy that what he's getting is the right amount.

Ahh yeah didnt think about it getting back to the owner :S hopefully it wont ...
I pay £50 a month for him, plus farrier and we have agreed to go halves on vet bills ... note I never said I wasnt paying anything for him.
I'd be happy for him to be on deep litter if he had a half decent bed, which he doesnt. I would be happy to pay for the bedding, and am thinking of buying a few bales to put in when I want to, my only problem is I live in the middle of nowhere and dont drive so cant get anywhere :/ which makes it lucky Ted is a 2 minute walk down the road from me. The arrangement we have with his bed is that she does him if she has time, if not then I do him, although I have said many times that I'd like to always muck him out just because believe it or not I actually enjoy it! After sepnding all day mucking out the horses at work its nice to muck out a nice easy bed (hes on shavings so nice and easy to muck out as hes clean
