And check what your feeding in the paddock. Rich rye grass and rye hay and haylage is the biggest cause as its too rich for horses. If your reseeding buy meadow pasture seed and poo pick when possible. Chain harrowing makes the grass even richer.

I'm convinced there is a hormonal aspect at play.

Obi has been stable and healthy for months and now his soles are splatting :(

OMG  This thread has really given me a kick up the backside! My girl is a good doer and coming out of winter far too fat.

My hacking confidence is totally shot, so she has had hardly any exercise recently. But I can't let her suffer from laminitis so we will start an exercise programme tomorrow by hook or by crook, to get that weight off and a BF grass muzzle will be being ordered on pay day.

One additional worry tho - what do you mean by 'his soles are splatting' please? What should I be looking out for re splatting soles?!

Sorry - it's hoof geek lingo :D

It's where the soles are flat due to metabolic/dietary problems.

With my horse - he gets circular spots in each toe area where the sole becomes thinner.
It's a symptom I saw and it convinced me to get Obi tested for Cushing's last spring. He started on Prascend and finally started to fill out tissue to his soles. Now this spring and he has developed the thin patches again :(

You find many horses start with flatter soles and stretched white lines around spring time. Also hoof abscesses are abound this time of year.

I think my yard think I'm the crazy one! Mine was in a starvation paddock untill December and has always been on soaked hay even in the frosts- I would rug up his soak bowl to stop it from freezing (it worked!!) and whenever I brought him in would check his feet- he's only 4 but I know being a native he is a likely candidate. At the moment he's only put for a half day. I feel it's an awful life to be stabled so much but I want to keep him sound and its too muddy for a muzzle
