I have a horse that has been in hard work , he is not lame and working well but just below his hock a sort of ridge has come up , it feels like grissle and is amost horizontal between his hock and his cannon bone. As I say no lameness, would it be inflamation of the annual ligament or a tendon sheath.? Any ideas?

the annular ligament is around the fetlock so it wont be that. difficult to say what it is though from the description. glad you've got a vet coming to look at it.

Not a curb it is definately on the outside of the hock not the back. I thought the annular ligament distal end was near the hock but only from reading in books.
Anyway the vet came out and thinks it is inflamation of the extensor tendon sheath, he is to be hosed and kept an eye on but he had flexion tests ect and was completely sound.
It was nice to get it chacked though and will keep a close eye on it.

distal means lowest/nearest the foot, but anyway the annular ligament is definitely round the fetlock - i did learn something in anatomy, plus my horse has had both of his operated on.

glad the vet didn't think it was anything too bad.

Annular ligament is definitely fetlock. My mare had hers cut as the vet thought it was strangling the tendon as she always had lots of swellings/windgalls in that area.
Was done under a general and cost £1500.
Have got a pic post op of the cut somewhere if you want a look but my guess is that is isn't the annular ligament.

Sorry im butting in on this post, please could you let me know what problems you had with your mare (before the op) and put pics up ? :) my friends horse has just been diagnosed with this problem and we would really appreciate more info about it!
thanks

My horse has just been diagnosed with a torn annular ligament but showing no sign of lameness. Will post a photo tomorrow as vet said its an unusual lump and he hasn't see one like it before its the size of a golfball but on the side, tendon is normal

My boy did his annular ligament too. did it meesing around in the field in the summer a few years ago. Although the fetlock is large there was no real lameness and he returned to full work and hunting. However, following an enforced layoff due to me being lame I now find that he trips a lot on that foot as he seem to be unable to flex the joint fully. Mrs W did yours show this sysmpton too? At 18 yrs I feel prob too old to try an op. He also did the hind one too last year!

mine had the op aged 20. he does trip a bit more on his hinds now but then he's now 24 so unsure if it's related or not. it was worth the op with him as he was really quite lame pre-op and although he had a relapse 6mths post-op and needed another 2yrs off to return to soundness he is now back in work and winning at shows again aged 24. luckily his welshie feathers just about cover his lumpy fetlocks.

this was his left hind at the time of the initial injury:

and his right hind (only lame on this leg once the other one completely blocked out, but not as bad on this one)

and both together:

Those fetlocks look very similar to my boy. He is 17.2 hh Percheron cross so very chunky which is why I was worried about him having a GA as well as his age. He is almost sound, and certainly sound enough, but it was the tripping in front that worries me. He is a big boy to fall over and as I still have after effects from my broken ankle I don't fancy any further injuries or worse to me ....or him either.

My boy is 18 so no more eventing for him now :( he's on his first week of box rest and not too happy about it.
