so backstory, june last year (2 months after purchase) diva did her SDFT in both back legs, cue lots of box rest and a very angry pony - whilst on box rest she was downright dangerous, aggressive and unhappy, understandbly. she could be difficult to handle before being lame though, we’re talking body slamming you into walls etc because she hadn’t even been taught the basics before i bought her.

cleared june this year, and she’s a poppet 99% of the time now - always been protective over food but now it’s aimed at lily putting her head over the wall not me, i can brush her/rug up etc whilst she eats with no issue, no more aggression in the stable save for pulling a face when i tell her to get out the way when im mucking out, or go in with a water bucket that’s not got food in! since being back out in the field she’s fine, she gets grumpy if they stay in for a few days for whatever reason though

this concern came yesterday when i was brushing between her front legs and she snapped her teeth at my head - no contact thankfully but i tried again later on with just my hand and same response.
didn’t think much of it at the time, just thought i’d scrubbed too hard or something, we went out to a clinic last night and she gave me the best ride i’ve had on her! she’s still very green, we get the odd buck going into canter, but overall doing well.

her saddle needed refitting and before that we were having a lot of rodeo moves in the canter, since it being refitted she’s 80% better at home, 90% better at a clinic in a bigger arena. put it down to baby stuff but now questioning if it’s more sinister.

she’s more often than not fine to girth up, anytime she’s put an ear back i’ve put it down to me squishing her in a bit too tightly for her liking, but she stands nicely to be tacked up and doesn’t go to the back of the stable or anything.

i’ve battled all year with her coat looking naff too, this is one of the biggest things since looking more into it that’s making me question it, before she went lame she was on a handful of chaff as a token gesture when lily got fed and her coat was amazing, this last year she’s been on 2 different balancers and various different supplements and i’ve struggled to get her coat really shine, she’s just been semi-shiny i suppose. meanwhile lily isn’t on a balancer and doesn’t get brushed as often as she should, and she’s been shiny all year.

i think i’m going to get her booked in for a scope anyway, even thinking it all through i don’t think she presents as a “typical” (is there any such thing now?!) case, but there’s just the thought in the back of my mind that she’s not “just a bit grumpy”
sorry this is so rambly, just needing to get my thoughts out! and feeling awful that if this is ulcers it’s been going on since the box rest, but because there was such a dramatic change when she went back out we’ve all just assumed she’s simply a bit of a grump.

ETA: she was trotted up for the farrier and saddle fitter a couple of weeks ago, both said she looks brilliant, tracking up nicely ridden too etc. i’m confident that if she does have them, it’s come from the previous lameness/box rest

It might worth scoping.

I do find though coming out of summer some horses just get grumpy it's just the change that gets to them I think, I just always give them some aloe vera juice coming into autumn.

Have you tried linseed for her coat?

she’s always been on linseed, i’ve played around with amounts, she’s been on outshine for a while too but i have heard mixed reviews on that one.

i started aloe vera juice from yesterday, my concern is that she’s been a bit of a grump pretty much always! because she went lame so soon after i bought her, and she was difficult before that, im finding it so hard to look back and think what she was like before the box rest!

One of my mares is being a right grump at the moment ears back and goes to bite me when I do the front of her rug up, she’s fine however with me touching her tummy and doing the surcingles up. Sometimes I get a face when I first do her girth up but nothing afterwards. She’s had physio and saddle checked recently too. It’s funny because this time last year i got the exact same responses and i scoped her and she scoped clear not an ulcer in sight. Nothing significant has happened between now and then and she’s not a stressy pony at all and she’s great riding wise. And now I have just read was pinkvsboots has put above and I agree with that might just be this time of year

thankyou! she was less grumpy in summer thinking on it, but definitely still a bit grumpy🤣

In my limited experience of this week, I would scope. My mare's only symptoms were a reluctance to go forwards, windsucked 3 times and smelly poo and we found a problem on scoping (see my other thread for details), even if they scope and find nothing you can rule it out.

Definitely scope - my laid back cob had ulcers, it took a fair amount of persuading me that something like her could have ulcers, but it appears there are 2 types, and one isn’t caused by stress (no one is totally sure what causes hind gut ulcers, but it isn’t thought to be stress as no acid there).
Her symptoms were inconsistent, but over many areas (occasional napping, occasional girth issues, occasional ridden stuff, etc) and to be honest I was relieved when it was ulcers as they are generally very treatable, the other options were much more uncertain!

Louis is the same every year around October and November time his just grumpy in his stable mainly at bringing in time his fine in the field and his fine to ride.

They only come in to be ridden and have a feed he thinks his always had an opinion on coming in he only wants the stable when he wants it.

yes i saw your thread, i agree id rather waste the money and have the peace of mind it’s just her personality🤞🏻

Yes our little mare is always a bit grumpy you have to keep yours eyes open and your wits about you, she’s definitely not the cuddly sort 🤣
see she’s odd, she’ll give me a snog and let me cuddle her but then pull a face at me in the next moment! when i first bought her i went on holiday a couple of weeks after, she wouldn’t even let me hug her, shot to the back of the stable bcos she clearly hadn’t been loved on like that before🤣

when i’m mucking out she comes and nudges me, rests her head on my shoulder, but then if i very kindly click and point at her to shift her bum she has a real huff!🤣

I didnt think I was having any issues until yesterday 🤣
Orbi was bronking and squealing while cantering,(he does this in the field too) head up in the air 🤣 I just assumed it was because we rode with pals yesterday and he was showing off a bit but this morning his poops were loose so agree possibly the weird time of year 😳

My mare started this in October 2023, we scoped, 2 tiny ulcers and a healthy stomach - grade 1/2. Vet advised not to treat. Fast forward to September 2024 still been doing it - new vet advised to treat for ulcers. She has stopped this behaviour now. I mean, if you look at my other post she has various issues but I do think the ulcer medication has helped.

I'd get her scoped and the vet to watch her trot up/lunge for piece of mind. Could also be related to the seasons changing, or hormonal?

yes i think i am going to get her booked in and ask them to watch her trot up - im pretty confident she’s not lame, the behaviour has been consistent for a while and we’ve had multiple professionals in the last couple of weeks, she was last trotted up for the vet in june.

i wouldnt say hormonal, her seasons don’t seem to affect her in the slightest, i can only tell if she’s loose in the arena and flirting with the gelding in the field😂
