Another 4x4 thread

My 5 door 2.7 Diesel Terrano does well on fuel for it's size, tows brill as well :D
be careful of the later ones for electrical faults and dodgy speedo's, think the electrics were done in mexico or some such place.

2nd this I love my Nissan Terrano tho i dont tow a trailer well horse one only large box one for feed and can tow caravan with it.

look on the honest john web site for car comparison

As a bit of an offroading nerd, my suggestion would be to look into an Isuzu Trooper (good spares can be bought from Milner Offroad at very wise prices, but avoid their wheel bearings!) or a Toyota LandCruiser. Landcruisers are absolutely solid, and will go on for ever! I have a P reg Isuzu Trooper 3.1TD swb that will tow upto 3 ton, and happily pulls an IW 505 plus two horses. I suspect it's doing about 25 - 28mpg normally, and £20 diesel will last a week. Of course, whatever you have WILL do less when towing.

For snow and ice, I reccomend getting whatever you purchase fitted with All Terrain tyres, which are primarily for road use but will have enough tread to see you safely through snowed up roads.

I have an old Toyota Hilux (yes, like the TopGear one but blue!) that I offroad, and it's fuel economy is fantastic (around 45mpg) however, it has no weight to it for towing, and I would only ever use it as a tow vehicle in an emergency (least of all because it's now somewhat bigger than stock and would sit the trailer at an angle! god for the pee draining out the trailer I suppose!!) however, I know alot of people who have double cab pickup trucks that tow with no problems whatsoever. They have more advantages for us horsey folk too as you can dump everything in the buck and not get the inside of the cab filthy!! Isuzu Rodeo's are good and don't go for crazy prices. Toyota Hiluxes are exellent but now go for a premium because export prices are sky high. Worth a thought!

EF.

PS, as a side note, if you look at a 3.0l or 3.1td Isuzu Trooper, make sure they they have had the manufacturers recall work done (think the 3.0 had injector issues, and the 3.1td had ceramic heater issues).

I've had my KIA Serento 3 years from new and I love mine. It's never let me down and it tows two horse with ease. And it did win tow car of the year 3 years running. Always wondered why they made the new chassis much lighter on the new models, being as the old one was such a good tow car.

Keep a very close eye on the driveshaft. If it fails whilst driving you could be looking at £4k worth of repairs. Have a look at the Kia owners club forum section on Sorentos.

I'd like to put a vote in for the one I got...

It's a Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin..

Had it a year now and not had one problem, fuel economy for a 4x4 is fab, its been very reliable, coped with all weather and terrain.. and was amazed I could afford it in the first place (under your budget)

I love it so much!

Would highly rec. to anyone looking for a small cheap 4x4 that is functional and reliable and pretty ;o)

Mine can tow, I have chosen not to, but it does have the capability however the LWB version would be better for this.. still great cars as one of my friends has one and same as me is in love!
