Another 4x4/towing question

Someone told me a SWB, but cannot remember why

Makes no odds to towing capacity - a SWB defender can still tow 3.5t

A SWB can turn in a tighter area, but a LWB can hold more stuff!! So in my case its easy to park and I have lots of stuff so an LWB is better

Yes, I have been told a SWB is easier to reverse the trailer with ...

Just wondered if it made any difference when actually towing -I sat in a SWB 4x4 last weekend and it happily towed an IW510 and 2 horses.

Have always used lorries previously so never really looked into it - have now decided to get a trailer so doing some research and the 4x4 I am looking at is a LWB. I too have a lot of stuff!

we have swb feelander and lwb tows same weight just its with the balancing. I would tow a 510 with a SWB feelander and the trailer is same length if not longer than the car!

I will probably be getting a Bateson or Richardson trailer ... I am looking at a LWB Nissan Terrano to tow it with - 3.0L diesel.

I think it should be ok with a podgy 15.2hh pony and a finer 16hh horse + tack + hay/water + 2 people.

Just wondered if I should really be looking for a 3 door SWB Terrano - there dont seem to be many of those about.

When I was looking my uncle (a mechanic) got some advise from people who towed and they said yes a SWB is fine for a smaller trailer and it is easier to reverse but a LWB is more stable if you have a heavier trailer (i.e. a 510, Bateson etc) and are going to carry two bigger horses

Erm...no such thing as SWB and LWB Freelander. The Sport, 3 door and 5 door are all the same length (4500mm). It's a common myth that one. The 5 door just looks longer. Proof:

The Nissan Terrano is different though

I tow with a big Mercedes Sprinter. Bigger than my 510 in height, width and length. Very stable, never feel the trailer at all (and I have the one with extra power). Reversing is the same, just need more space is all - because the combined length is longer.

Thanks everyone - going for a LWB.

Of course with all of this dithering around, the really nice terrano I saw advertised on Monday has now been sold (typical) so looking at the second choice which has double the mileage but still perfectly acceptable and, most importantly, has never towed before.

My friend has a LWB Terrano withIW trailer. She tows 2 16hh horses with 2 people and all the gear and it is brilliant and we live in hilly country with lots of steep hills with no space to get a run at them.

I have a SWB Terrano and I tow my Wessex Olympian with two big ones in. It tows like a train I have had it for 3 1/2 years now and it has been ever so reliable.

I would highly recommend them
