Hi,

How long does it take for the hole to begin to close or close after an abscess. I realise that horses hooves grow at different speeds and it depends on the size of the hole but a rough idea and your experiences would be great,

thanks.

Has your farrier seen the horse as mine has major abcess problems (have posted for help and advice too), the reason I ask is because when my horse has had one that is on the sole he has packed the hole with an anti bacterial gel and animalintex. This usually stays in a few days and comes away as the foot grows.

yes he's been fine, he's only 2, so not ridden yet but I left him for about 4 weeks before walking him out but he's been turned out the whole time, as he jumped out of the field shelter the first night that I put him in so, I just poulticed him for 5 days with a boot on and turned him out, its was at the most annoying time when it was so rainy and wet so it ended up getting reinfected about a week or 2 after so just poulticed for 5 days again and plugged every other day with cotton wooll and purple spray for about 3 weeks and its been fine ever since "touch wood" I just make sure I clear any mud out each time i hoof pick and seems to be okay!

I've never had a horse that's had an abscess before so have just been doing what I think is the best!

but im sure if your's isn't lame then you'd be fine to ride, just make sure the hole is clear when you get back! and maybe spray it with purple spray after a ride as well!

It'll not 'close', it'll grow out! how long depends who deep it is or how high up the foot it is. A horse who's working their feet properly can regrow their entire foot from top to bottom in 4months, usually 6months. A horse doing nothing with it's feet, or shod, can take 8months sometimes. You can work out how long the hole will take until it grows out from there.
