My youngster arrived as a 6 month old with very long heels - he had only been trimmed once (don't ask) and had some flare at the front. My trimmer has been trying to correct his foot shape ever since, and we now have decent heels. He's 18 months now by the way. However his front toes are still long and the HPA is too shallow. There's a demarcation where you can see the new hoof is growing at the correct angle, but the toes are still "flat". I'm hoping the toe flare/flatness will grow out soon enough, and he is completely sound with a lovely heel first action; we have a horrible flinty, stony track running through the field and he's happy trotting and cantering down it for his feed! His frogs are nice and healthy, and from underneath the feet look great. Hinds are fine.
He is out at grass 24/7; we supplement with magnesium as it's low in the grass, and he has Suregrow for his vits and mins. My question is - is it likely that the lower hoof would still be flared after 12 months of corrective trimming, even if that hoof is now growing out? Just trying to figure out whether he's going to be a candidate for coming off the grass in spring and autumn.
