All I'm saying is thankgod I was on Montycob!
What is it with drivers and underestimating the width of their cars?
My nearest village is just going through development of 120new houses, so roads are being dug for gas, pavements fenced off, etc- hence why I rode Oshk in school and took bombproof cob out (road VERY busy on a saturday)
1/2 of the road had been fenced off by pretty red and white things, and there was a lovely yellow JCB dancing about, so I thought I would give it a little bit of room incase Monty decided he didn't like it.
Now I also had out with me a 10year old child on a sweet little pony- someone who I ride for's daughter, so obviously I had to make sure she was safe too.
Obviously Mr Mondeo behind me had places to go, he tried to overtake me but there was a car parked at the other side of the road, so he stuck his head out of the window and said, very rudely "Move your F*cking horses out of my way" to which I replied a very pretty middle finger. When he accellerated past me at first given opportunity at a rather alarming speed and almost knocked little girl off pony I gave him a hand gestures, not wanting to swear in front of child. He indicated to pull up..my heart sank. Little 4ft man comes storming upto me yelling, I asked him not to swear in front of child, he swore more, but as he got upto monty he must have realised how big his feet were. He stopped a few feet away and said to me
"Who do you think you are, riding on the road and shouting at me, horses shouldnt ride on the road, it is a legal neccesity they walk on the pavement, and he suggested I f*ck off and use the bridlepaths next time."
I was so so mad with him, I walked Monty forwards until his head was towerng over the little man's before pointing out that no, actually it is illegal to ride on pavements and he was in a 30 zone, where he was, when he overtook me, exceeding.

What an idiot

I think you dealt with that very well

I'd have smacked him over the head with a schooling whip!

blooming ignorant people .. i once got told that it was illegal for me to be riding and leading on the road :-(

I cant stand poeple who have no patience like that!
My horse is very bombproof but was spooked by an idiotic driver last weekend when they decided to drive on a grass verge in desperation to overtake me! I was just a few metres from a passing place but he could not wait.
He got what he deserved though and ended up driving over a rock which by the sounds of it destroyed the underside of his car [but thats what spooked maddie] he was even daft enough to reverse back over it!

I am sorry to hear about this incident. However, unfortunately incidents of this kind are become more common.

I would ask you to report this incident to the police and ask them for an incident number. This ensures that it is listed on the police database system.

Could I also ask you also complete a BHS accident form and return it to the BHS as it is important that incidents of this nature are logged so that when we negotiate with government and local authorities we have the statistics to back up our demand for more off road riding routes.

A direct link to the accident form is:
http://www.bhs.org.uk/Content/accident-report-form.asp

Where there are existing equestrian routes or usage close to a building development we have in many cases been succesful in getting the developers to erect post and rail fencing to provide a safe passage for horses and also make their contractors aware that there is horse usage and that they must take care when operating machinery This is done by horse riders making us aware of a planning application so that we can put forward comments.

Thank you.

thats so bad...how horrible...this sort of thing happened to me when I was driving my pony....A car in the end nearly clipped me and I pulled right out into the road to make them slow down as I was tault...
Sympothies as this does make your heart race and is upsetting....
Did you get his number plate...? You can report him to the police for dangerous driving and they do go around and have a word...happened when I was learning to drive, my instructor took the number and they got a hard telling off...
Should of ran him down...wouldnt of been too much effort from the sounds of it...

That is terrible. What a nasty piece of work he sounds. It's awful that he tried to intimidate you and the young girl like that as well. Well done you for sticking up for yourself!

Some years ago, a friend of mine had a couple of near misses with cars and so she decided that in future, she would carry her metal ended schooling whip the wrong way up. The cars that came too close got a whack on the roof with it. She had no complaints from them when she explained that she was very sorry but that they came too close and touched her whip.
