I have a lovely cob cross who I bought 4 months ago having totally lost my confidence with my last horse . She a lovely girl but can be very on the forehand if allowed to lean. She is currently wearing a Kimberwick bit. I would like to try her in something dressage legal but not sure where to start. I am getting lessons from a classical dressage instructor so she is beginning to work much better from behind and her schooling is getting much better. She can be strong so still need some brakes . Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

I have a strong mare who is ridden in a kimberwick for jumping and hacking (although currently in a Pelham as I lost it!)

For flatwork I use a loose ring, French link snaffle. The French link is sharper than a lozenge and the loose ring stops her being able to lean as much. I have to do lots of transitions working on light contact to get her listening to it- although I have to take a sharp 'check' at times to stop her trying to lean her weight on it.

I currently am schooling my other horse in a universal gag (he's gone a bit more lively since the grass came through!), with the reins on the snaffle rein and then if it starts to go wrong I just move the reins down to the 3rd ring- which isn't very often but it makes me feel more prepared just in case.

A hanging cheek snaffle is dressage legal and because it gives poll pressure it gives s bit more control on a strong horse. You can get them with a French link if you prefer.
