i have a 16.1 7yr who i event and i have had some quite big problems bitting him! atm he is in a rubber kimblewick which give me breaks (just!) however i have now found that i have no stearing. i have tryied him in all different kinds of snaffle including cherry rollers etc i did try in in the myler ported snaffle but he wouldnt take up a contact in it, he is also quite soft in his mouth so i dnt really want anthing to severe. any suggestions 4 what i could use??

I have a similar problem with one of my boys which i still havent found a complete solution for. He has a soft mouth but is very strong and runs through the bridle. A rubber pelham he overbends in. A waterford is too sharp and he hates it. A dutch gag he nearly went over backwards in. I have discovered that he quite likes the myler comfort snaffle with hooks. It is the only bit i seem able to steer him in for show jumping. It is still not strong enough for XC but i am going to try putting a back strap on it to see if that helps.
I had previously tried a myler with a port and he didnt like that at all. Have you tried yours in a simple comfort mouthpiece? Just an idea.
My other boy does everything in a snaffle and life is so much easier! but i will find a solution one day!

I used to suffer with brakes and steering but am getting to the bottom of it. At the moment, for competitions, I'm using a KK ultra snaffle which is a loose ring jointed bit with a solid mouth. However, I do use a running martingale for s/j and c/c and find it is the running martingale that gives me better brakes. I tried him in a Waterford snaffle - hated it, twisted snaffle - even worse, loose ring snaffle but with hollow mouht - hated it, 3 ring gag - useless, but have some success with a french link jointed pelham which I ride with 2 reins, and a Baucher hanging cheek snaffle which I use everyday and change to the snaffle for compeitions. Or I use the pelham at home and change to the Baucher for compeitions, depending on how he's feeling.

I had a similar issue with my eventer, I used Neue Schule 3 ring with curb, it worked very well and I swear by it. He was very very very strong but i felt it gave me enough control to allow me to use my legs and seat effectively.

i use the myler snaffle where the reins go thro the slots on the bit rings,(is this the comfort snaffle?)can i get a strap 2 use on this style then(reading prev replies)?? as im just lacking a little control sj&the rushing costs us 4 faults which is VERY annoying?

If you have holes on your snaffle for a curb chain, you just buy the hooks and attach a curb chain. I was thinking of attaching a leather strap instead as i thought it would be less severe than a curb chain.
