My other boy has been living out 24/7 this winter, I am really pleased with how he has coped. He has been getting plenty of feed and hay, and although he has lost muscle tone (months holiday) he has kept his weight on quite well.

I have now brought him back into work and have recently started to up the work, so he is just starting to sweat up during, so I was hoping to clip him, however, its going to get so cold up here this week, Im unsure if its a very good time. Its going to be -8 on thursday night!

At the moment he is in a lightweight with a middleweight on top and is lovely and warm under that. I was thinking if I clipped him I could put two middleweights on him just until this cold snap passes.

Is he likely to get cold and drop weight if I clip him and do this? He would have a full clip by the way.

My TB lives out 24/7, he has a high blanket clip and a heavy weight and middle weight on when its really chilly (like now!) and he seems very happy and warm! He does have a field shelter with a big straw bed in that he uses a lot too. I did give him a full clip last year but feel he is happier and easy enough to manage with sweating etc with a high blanket clip and I don't feel so guilty either!

I would leave until this cold snap is over, he will not sweat up so much during it anyway, as it has been so mild he will really feel the drop and may need an extra rug even without being clipped.

Hopefully not too long as I have several to do and have told the owners to wait, it will mean me rushing round trying to catch up with them all at once.
