Friends mare is due in two weeks. She has no bagging up at all but her nipples are looking larger.

However tonight she was acting rather strange. She had a wee, then started running round her stable with her tail in the air, then tried to wee again (about 2 drops). She continued to be a bit hyper for about 10 mins more with her tail up. She has now settled but I noticed that she had a dark browny red discharge from her vulva. Not a lot but it dripped out a little bit.

Is this normal or should we be worrying?

I wouldnt panic you quite often see this it is just stuff or rubbish if you like that starts to get pushed out as the cervix starts to dilate .
I would look more for the slackening and puffiness of the vulva along with all the other normal signs.

Thank you. We were a little worried it might have been a sign of something not quite right, like an infection or something. Mare is happy and munching hay now as if nothing had happened - think she was just winding us up.

My mare did just this about 3 weeks before foaling, and when I was on sleep-over duty in the tack room monitoring the CCTV I woke up on one occasion to see this enormous tail sticking right up under the camera!!! I though "OMG, this is it!" leapt out of my sleeping bag, but no ... she was just prancing around the stable with her tail up in the air a bit like she does when she's in season! No idea why they do this (slight contractions???) but she didn't actually foal until she was very waxed up and the muscles around her tail were really slack.

Ah you hit the nail on the head. Just like when she is in season as well. Weird. Ive just been out and checked her and she is asleep and happy and relaxed. I still think she will go late as she really isnt showing any boobie signs yet lol.
