Hi

I have seen some posts about sweet itch and Brewers yeast and before I try it out I had a question or 2 that I am hoping you guys could help me with!

Firstly, as I have heard that its not the most appetising, has anyone tried giving human brewers yeast tablets? Do they work and if they do, which ones do you buy and how many do you feed per day?

I know this may not work out from a cost point of view compared to getting the powder form but because I feed my horse pure magnesium in his evening feeds which is also not the most appetising, I am worried that if I give him brewers yeast as well he will be completely put off his feeds!!

Also would feeding brewers yeast have any issues being fed alongside magnesium? Anyone have an experience with that? If not I will check with my Vet and see what they have to say.....

Any advice you can give is greatly appreciated :)

Brewer's Yeast is an acquired taste, but it can be masked with mint. I started off with a hint of BY and slowly increased it and am now giving 15ml. Horse did turn his nose up until I added spearmint. However, I forgot to put the mint in the other day and he lapped his feed up regardless, so I may be able to save some pennies in future!

Don't see why it should have any impact on the magnesium.

Mine licks his Marmite off my hand. He has his own squeezy bottle. He still got a bit of sweetitch last year, and I was using all the usual lotions and potions, so I don't know how much it helped.

Marmite is very expensive, strong tasting and a poor way to deliver a high B vit dose to horses!!

I use brewers yeast powder, which I bought in a 25kg sack from charnwood milling and lasts a horse over 2 years!!

I feed a 50mg scoop daily, and this is enough to make his sheath less attractive to the midges.

The idea is to feed enough to raise the B vitamin levels so that the horses smell changes, midges are actually attracted to CO2 so will not completely work, but might mean they choose to feed off another horse instead of the one with sweet itch
