At Hand EC they have a class called "5/6 year old non qualifier". Does anyone know what that is and what height it would be? I cant find anything on the BSJA site about age classes

Also to add to Coedcae does the hand now have a large warm up arena? I know when they first reopened it was tiny as I remember reading posts on it.
Sorry to hijack your thread Ju

It's in our interest after Hartbury on Saturday

What date(s) are they as I can' see them on the omnibus schedule

At a guess though i'd say somewhere between 1.10m and 1.25m...

The Hand has two massive outdoor arenas (1 jumping & 1 warm up) now but they have not been using them due to all the building they are doing. They are currently building perm stable blocks and the new lorry park is just going in. I am guessing all to be ready for the 3/4 day show.

I did BSJA the other week and we were stuck in the indoor warm up. Really annoyed me as the outdoor warm up is huge and lovely and was not being used.

Looking at where it falls in the schedule i'd say it's a 1.15m or 1.20m class

In my experience the age classes are HUGE and would not be something I would want to take a 5 or 6 year old over.

They seem to be a showcase for youngsters with talent, but will be over jumped so will either go sour or do a tendon. Hey ho just MHO and I am only just getting round to thinking about newcomers!

They're only huge if the horses (and/or riders) aren't ready for them

You must remember that a top int'l prospect will be jumping 1.50m's as a 7yo and a Foxhunter Finalist (that could theoretically be a 5yo) will have had to have jumped 1.50m against the clock

Agreed, most average 5/6yo's won't be doing that, but then most average 5/6yo's shouldn't be entering the age classes

Thanks, you've definitely convinced me, I'll stick with BN with my 5yr old

Funnily enough Geoff Billington was on TV last night, it was his masterclass from Your Horse Live, last year. And he said when he was younger he had a goal of winning 100 classes a year and that he would always push his youngsters in the JO's. He said he went through 900 odd horses and wrecked a high percentage of them. Now that he's older and the owner, he takes it easy with his youngsters, so that they last
