Inspired by Jen's report, here are some some pics from Keysoe riding camp last week. First time to a camp, first time taking Finnegan away overnight.

We have lots to work on and are at an early stage in training, so this was more about getting some experience and building confidence. My main aim (as it usually is), is not to fall off. And, yay, we succeeded! (Although we did have one bobble in the last class of the camp so it would have turned out differently.)

Wednesday was 'arrive and settle' day, and we watched the dressage show that was on in the lovely but spook-filled arena.

We then did sj on Thursday morning which turned out a bit eventful as the other 2 riders fell within about 10 mins of each other. No harm done but horses needed to settle a bit. Fortunately, F and I managed to not make it 100% fallers and he settled really well in the arena. First time jumping rustic poles and he took them all nicely - forward, keen, bouncy canter and felt confident (although they were teeny fences). I am working hard on allowing with my hands and this def improved, although sadly not in this shot. And what is that face?! He looks nice though, so I'll post it for that reason.

Flatwork in the afternoon, which was a massive trial by fire with flowerpots, markers, judge's boxes and the cafe along one side. He was a bit tense for a while but he contained himself and did some decent work, despite my awful left leg waggling about. Main tip was to lift up my left rein and pick him up on that side as he falls out through his left shoulder. Awful facial expression again - and it was v hot! But really chuffed to have gotten some experience in a busy arena.

Feed talk in the evening which didn't really overwhelm me. Shame the weighbridge lady didn't make it as would have liked to have gotten him weighed - he's a bit porky and on a diet at the moment!

The next morning we went out to the little xc field, spent some time around the water, which F was very relaxed about. Did a coffin for the first time, and the steps up and down. Then whizzed around some inviting little fences. We had a run out at the first but represented and then did a little course first time round, with plenty of fences we hadn't done before.

Oh, forgot to add we did a pole/grid work session as well. He was tired and it was blooming hot. It was hard work for him as he's not totally balanced in canter but he tried his heart out, although he did demolish a few poles along the way. However, we improved over the session which is good enough for me.

I did cheat massively and didn't actually camp (we stayed in a B&B and I'm sooo glad we did!). But what a fabulous experience for us both. I felt like I got to know F better and we both learned so much just by being at a new buzzy venue. I can't believe how well he behaved for his age (5yo) - he went like a dream the whole time, could not have asked for more. Am v lucky to have such a dude of a horse :-)

Cheat not camping it!

Plus no excuses to not compete there now! They do fab arena eventing through the winter :)

Super F pony I really must come and steal him :D

Oh fab pics Bernster, and the XC course looks great. Finnegan is a really super chap: dianchi, I have also threatened to steal him, so you'll have to get in the queue :p

Giving with the hands is something I've had to really push myself to learn too - and have recently got it! RI told me to push my knuckles into G's neck as we take off, and this really has worked for me, my jumping has improved beyond measure.

PS I don't blame you for not camping - we had student accommodation :wink3:

Thanks both.

B&B was inspired, I tell you. The water in the bathroom was brown, the shower was busy and it rained the first night. We had a lovely sitting room, en suite and cosy bed. Bliss! Is the arena eventing over rustic/portable xc fences? If they have a baby one I might have a crack at that.

See, camping with no camping is def the way forward! I tend to default into hands back, was much better in both jump sessions, but def creeps back now and again. So many habits to get out of !

I went to that one last year, this year pony is still coming back into work after treatment for KS but hoping to do some of the keysoe camps next year. I was really impressed with the instructors.

I did camp which i don't 't mind, it didn't rain and managed to find quiet times for the shower but the food was a bit basic and they kept running out of things if you were on the later breakfast or lunch session because of your times. However new caterers had just started the contract to hopefully that's improved.

What gorgeous pics! Lovely lovely horse.

I was at Equifest the other week and can only agree that you made the right choice not to camp - I loathe camping and have been reminded of why. Showers were grim and only braved it twice.

Sorry to hear about your horse Criso, wishing him/her a speedy recovery! Catering was better this time I think, fairly basic but enough of it and plenty of carbs to load up on.

Thank you :-) Yep, I was very happy to avoid the shower of doom !

Showers of doom indeed! I don't like to think I'm particularly high maintenance (us horsey girls don't tend to be haha) but anywhere that I have to wear flip flops in the shower is not high on my holiday hopes!

Great report, looks like you both had fun. He is a stunner, and you both look great together.
Ref the cheating, I don't blame you, I'm no fan of tents and would do the same. I'm off to camp with my grey Finn in a couple of weeks too. Fortunately a friend is lending me her horsebox, otherwise I'd be in a b&b. What are your plans now ?

I've pee'd in a bucket in dire situations whilst out on horse outings, but I draw the line at camping !

Grey Finns are the BEST ! Have fun at your camp, I'd be interested to hear what you do as I really like some of the stuff than JennBags did on hers. We've got a sp ride on Sunday which will be first time out with a larger gallopy group, which has just reminded me that I was planning on a stronger bit and martingale just in case. Then it's a baby hunter trial pairs for our very first comp outing, against the 12yos who will no doubt totally trounce me !!

I quite agree! Bucket/stable are fine for desperate times but the loos and showers were so vile by the time I got home, I've never been so happy to see my bathroom!

I'm a bit more of a wuss than you as I've opted for flatwork and sj only.
