My 2 foals are due in June/July. Both will definitely be coloured as their sire, Goshka Ringo (KWPN registered with Wetherbys) is a homozygous stallion for coloureds. The mares are both registered New Forest.

I've been thinking of registering them with CHAPS to get their passport (or would BSPA be better?) as registering them with Wetherbys will cost over £300!!!

Will they eligible? And how do i go about it?

I have emailed CHAPS but just wanted your thoughts while i wait.

Thanks

Its ok just had the reply from CHAPS. The parentage cannot be entered on the passport as Ringo is not registered with them, how stupid. Looks as if I'm going to have fork out, yet again.

The stud should help you with this to be honest!

They will issue a covering certificate, in fact you should already have them as the foals are shortly due. If you look on them it should say which societies he is registered with and you will be able to register his youngstock as part breds with whatever he is registered with. Whichever society he is registered with, you should register your foals with if that makes sense.
There is one society, not sure which though, that requires you to inform them of a birth within 5 days I think, so make sure you have checked your covering certificates thoroughly, pointless to be penalised because of a simple mistake like that.

CHAPS do seem to have grown far too big for their own boots don't they as both of yours are fully registered with breeding papers and so is Ringo too; just what is their problem eh?!

Am I missing something here.

Are you saying that you cannot register your coloured foals with CHAPS because the parents are not registered with them.

So if you have a coloured horse it has to come from parents that are registered with chaps for you to be able to register the horse.

Claire can register the foals with them but they will not acknowledge the breeding because Ringo is not registered with them as a stallion so they would go down as parentage unverified. Ridiculous isn't it?!

so could I register my horse his grandfather is registered but I dont know about the father. (father was stanhopes Dueka and grandfather stanhopes diddycoy.

TBH, any coloured horse can be registered with CHAPS, it's just that they won't verify breeding if it is not one of their stallions (not sure how you go on if the mare is registered with them though!) It sounds like you already have a passport for your horse, in which case CHAPS will overstamp it for you which will mean you can qualify for their classes etc.

Thanks, its all so confusing this showing (have never done it before)

Dont think I need to worry about breeding as he is gelded.

Yep thats right it is ridiculous, but i had the same problem with a WPB i had. I knew his sire, had his covering certificate, but because the stallion was registered with the British Palomino Society and not the Welsh Society i couldn't have him on the passport! What is the point, its so so stupid!!!

And it looks bad when it says sire- unknown, when he is known!!!

I know i need to reg them with Wetherbys its just its going to cost over £300!!!!

This is who Ringo is registered with. I have to reg my mares with them also and get them DNA tested, argh!!!! So annoying!

I have the full breeding and covering certificate for my young horse by Centyfor (he is coloured), and on my horses's chaps passport is says pedigree unrecorded. I had a big arguement with CHAPS as this horse was entering young horse classes and he needed his parentage on his passport but they didn't want to know. Centyfor is recognised as a coloured elite stallion but he passed his stallion grading with the Anglo European Studbook not CHAPS. How ridiculous can you get, so I have now got a young horse who I know has a full pedigree but in his passport there is nothing at all. Because of this the horse was gelded as a 5 year old because he could not enter a CHAPS stallion grading without a pedigree!!! Sorry I've ranted on a bit but I had the same problems and now my prospective stallion is a gelding with no papers!!!!!

That is just absolutely stupid, OMG it fustrates me so much! I can't imagine how annoyed you must have been. Why do they have such silly legislation, regulations and rules?!?!

My coloured was registered with the BSPA and I had verified breeding on his BSPA passport despite the fact that his parents were not BSPA registered so maybe you would be better off trying them.

Also had another thought Claire!
Weatherbys are also a passport issuer for 'general' horses, not just TBs but those that don't as such have a breeding society. It might be worth contacting them and seeing if they will accept those covering certificates and give your foals verified breeding. Other than that, the SHB probably would but animals have to mature at 14.2 or over.

QR -

I can hardly believe what I am reading here! That is absolutely bizarre - this is a colour society not a breed society....what planet are they on? I guess they are trying to get stallion owners over a barrel?

Ahhh so SHB might be out then as I'm hoping the foals will make 14.2 although i know they might go over.

I can register them with Wetherbys but they want DNA tests (mares and foals), etc which will cost over £300, thanks for your thoughts though.

Tia- yes very very bizarre, and annoying.

If you think they might go over 14.2 (which, I would have thought they should do easily) then you are in with the SHB, it's just that they don't register ponies under for full passports but think they would on the basic identity register.

Jusy a thought - what about the New Forest people, do they have a part bred register? Just check that they will accept and verify Ringo's papers on any passport. There is also the Sports Pony Studbook which might be worth a look.

Have you looked at the Scottish Sports Horse Society too? They will accept covering certificates and other proof to include in their passports. You can download all the forms and make sure they're what you need or you can ring 01383 852245 (10am to 2pm Mon - Friday) they could be a good bet! (foals need to be registered within a month of being born)

Let us know how you get on.
