I'm thinking about getting some new clippers. I've got some lister Liberty clippers at the moment but I'm not that keen on them. I've had them about 6 years. The battery pack works ok and does last a hunter clip but I find I'm always trying to rush to finish in case it runs out. The main things that bother me though are that they run really hot even though I've got the blades tensioned correctly and I oil them regularly. It just seems I'm always having to stop to let them cool down when other clippers don't seem to be as bad?

I also find that they run quite slowly compared to other clippers eg wolseley swifts.

I am torn between buying a mains lead for my Liberty clippers as maybe all medium duty clippers will have similar performance? Or I might sell them and buy some others. I've seen the liveryman arena c130 but I don't know if they will be better or not?

Noise isn't an issue, my horse is fine with any clippers.

Has anyone got any advice?
 
Found the same as you and bought a mains cable for them, sent them back to lister for a service and they are still rubbish.

They were ok when I first got them and I used them to clip cattle and sheep as well.

Just invested in heineger xperience clippers after I saw a friend whizzing through cob hair with them like it was butter.

I'm trying them today so will let you know of the comparison! They were £200 plus vat. Cheaper than the blinkin liberties!
 
Thanks for your reply. Just looked at the heiniger ones, they sound great so I will be interested to know how you get on with them. Where did you buy yours from?
 
I bought some clippers last year because the ones I kept borrowing from a friend (old Liveryman Mustangs) kept heating up a lot. After some research, I was thinking about Heiniger Xperience ones. But then Scats had an offer on a Lister Star clippers + trimmers for a cheaper price, and I decided to go for those (a friend bought them and was happy).
I've found the Lister Stars performed just fine on my very wooly pony, and importantly, stayed cool. They don't cut quite as effortlessly as the more heavy duty Mustangs and my clip looked a little less tidy. I think that was in part because the blade angle is different between the models, but also in part because the Stars are not quite as powerful. With more practice over the winter, my clips got tidier, and frankly, looks are not my main concern.
So I'd say the Lister Stars do the job just fine on a very hairy pony. The trimmers turned out to be a bonus. Initially, I was going to sell them on. But they actually turned out to be really useful to tidy up (they match the Star clip seamlessly on the "max" setting). But I do think the batteries are already a bit weaker than when I first got the trimmers, so those would only get a partial thumbs up from me.
 
My star gets very hot. Read a very good tip though - wrap an icepack around the blade to cool quicker.

However the hunter clipped a welsh cob without issue last year.
 
I used to have some lister neons which were the predecessors of the stars and they used to get really hot too :-/ I think I will steer clear of lister for my next ones.

My Stars get hot too, even with sharp blades tensioned correctly.

Unfortunately last year the motor died on my, I spoke to clippersharp and they said this was common for the listers, I still need to buy a new motor before the winter but am not overly impressed that it died when I realistically have hardly used them even though I've had them a good few years. They probably did a handful of clips on my old pony and then nothing for 2 years or so before getting them back out last winter, doing 1 full clip, 2 shetland bibs and a shoulder before dying!
 
Hm. Well, let's hope my Lister Stars last longer than that! I wonder if they've made changes to the model, and the more recent versions have had some of the issues fixed?
 
I bought some Masterclip Roamers last year. Heavy duty battery clippers that comes with a spare battery pack. Clipped two hairy beasts and a hairy Shetland and only had to change the battery pack halfway through doing the Shetland. Blades never got hot the whole time. Impressed several Lister and Liveryman owners! Reasonably priced, blades readily available and a sharpening service offered.

Same, mine are brand new last year. My friend has some older Stars - years older but like 3 years or so but they do 4 /5 horses a year, all hunter clips including one cushings pony all year round. She's never had a problem.
 
I have just bought some Lister Laser's - mains - very pleased with them.

The last ones I had were Premier1's, which were also really good but they went pop last week and the Laser's were on offer :)
 
Clipped her legs and mane with them yesterday as was pushed for time. Night and day from the liberties. Absolutely amazing and beautiful line free finish!!

Will be doing a full clip soon but legs and mane are the hardest bits so I'm pretty confident they are going to be ideal.
 
Thanks for the replies everyone. They sound great ffionwinnie! They look quite long - have you found that a problem? Where did you get yours from as they seem to be at least £300 wherever I have looked.

Got them from the local shop. Have you looked on mole valley? They were 208 + vat. They swapped the blades it came with for the ones I need for cattle/cobs.
 
Right looks like I've flogged the liberties. I'm very tempted by the Heiniger xperience, ffionwinnie have you done a full clip with yours yet and if so do you still love them?

We used to have the Liveryman Harmony clippers at work (super quiet and give a very tidy result) and they were very good BUT we were constantly having trouble with the cable. There was some kind of loose connection, I think, and we had to send them to be "fixed" numerous times. Don't know if this is a general problem though, or if we were just unlucky!

Yes done a full clip and I'm very happy with them. Need to get a finer blade for body possibly as it was a bit liney with the coarse blades (although with in a week it was fine!). Very pleased with them indeed.
