I have a Welsh Cob Section D. My question is: If I decide to clip him out what do I do with his legs? Mainly his feathers. Do I clip them off, or clip around them. His legs get so hairy and muddy (some kids actually asked if he was a shire horse!)

Look forward to your answers.

If you like his feathers then just don't clip his legs. Personally I love horses to keep feathers on. If not then take the whole lot off, the full length of his legs. Really its all or nothing, if you want him to look smart x

Clip out his legs totally on the first clip - then if you show him, they will have recovered by next show season. If you choose to keep the feather on, then use HIBI SCRUB to make sure that there is nothing nasty lurking in the undergrowth. HS also helps with Mud Fever.

I would leave his legs on completely and give him a hunter clip. In my experience D's legs are much happier hairy in winter. Just don't be tempted to wash the mud off the feathers, let them dry first.

I have a full Irish cob. i tend to clip once a year round about now. I find it easier to look after his feet.

have you tried pig oil? the mud will just brush of and his feather will be silky if you use it once a fortnight.

That all depends on the level of work!!

Mine is schooled 5 days a week plus on hack, he has a hunter clip with half a face. This suits his work load and enables me to continue showing him in breed classes

Thanks for your suggestions.

My reason for thinking about actually clipping his legs is that each winter he suffers mild mud fever and hair loss on his legs. His skin is not broken but is obviously not happy. A vet suggested to a friend to clip her cob's legs out to help prevent it, ie so feathers are not holding moisture in. Worried he might look odd with no feathers as Section D's are supposed to look natural.

I had some success with nappy rash cream. Have not tried Hibi Scrub or Pig Oil - will try it. Also see how wet this winter is going to be. Also looking at getting some matting for his field shelter, although it tends to stay quite dry.

Many thanks.
