Another crisis!

Hello one and all
As i've mentioned before I've had a nightmare with past mad horses. Ernie has so far been brilliant. Yesterday as it was tipping it down and he was wet through I took him on a walk. he's usually bomb proof hacking. When we got back on the yard some of the horses were galloping round like mental heads. Ernie then reared, completely stood up - he did it again when i smacked him for doing it. It's dented my confidence a bit as I never expected him to spit the dummy out so bad.... I worry what would have happened if I had been sat on him. I had a rearer before.... I don't want another one. That said he can be a div when lead.... it's never been his strong point.
The day before we really turned a corner in our lesson - I was getting back to the rider I used to be. I've gone completely backwards and on Sunday I was supposed to be taking him in hand to get some show experience.

I can completely understand why this was scary, BUT just because he reared when led does not mean he will rear when ridden, many horses know not to rear or buck when ridden but can do it on the lunge or in hand, and given that the others were running around and, presumably, you were about to turn him out I don't think it's that unreasonable for him to play up a bit. Don't give it another thought, least of all because if you start worrying about it you might transmit your fear to him. Horses sometimes mess around, no harm done!

i agree with this. my horse in the field bucks and rears like a mad thing. if she is really excited about going out in field in winter when turnout is a bit more restricted, she has had a bit of a rear before i let her go, just out of excitement. however, she has never reared or bucked when ridden, even if she has a strop about something. Don't let this knock your confidence. it was just a bit of excitement.
