Another Deep digital flexor tendon question

Hi, I've just been reading the other post about DDFT injuries and this is a question for everyone who's experienced them.

Was your horse's hoof hot?

It's just that my horse has a suspected DDFT injury in his hoof, based on nerve blocks the fact that Xrays were clear. The insurance wouldn't pay the £1500 for MRI so I didn't do that.

I'm just not convinced that the DDFT is the problem - he went lame overnight, but hadn't been doing any hard work at all, just doing a bit of riding club dressage and hacking.

On the front of the hoof there is an area of heat - a bit like when you have an abcess, but higher up towards the coronary band. I just wondered whether heat in the hoof was a sympton or not?

Hey my highland had no heat in foot at all, he varied from being lame one day to fine next, mine was also based on nerve block and x rays but no scan, spoke to another vet and she reconed that i should get an osteopath out to confirm it, i thik that what she said. i would maybe get a second opiion? but hope all goes ok, let me know how u get on would be interesting to hear xx

Never thought it was in the hoof, but didnt notice any thing unusual. My insurance paid half of the MRI (NFU), PetPlan pays for all of MRI.

My boy was diagnosed with a severe injury to the DDFT, following x-rays, nerve blocks and finally an MRI scan, paid for by PetPlan. He had no heat in his hoof at all, but was severly lame even in walk on soft ground.

Sadly for him, and me, it was not a happy outcome.

My horse had no heat in the hoof.There was swelling and a bowing of the tendon higher up.Very little lameness.He had a 10% tear so healed very quickly by everyone elses standards.

My mare had heat in her foot.

She has had lameness issues again since Christmas but now its the other foot. Vet thinks we might have the same injury as before but now in other foot. Having an MRI scan in a few weeks to find out. My insurers are happy to pay full cost luckily.

My horse's foot was warm, and her heel was blazing hot. This went on for about two weeks, when the hoof went cold again and the heel was warm. We suspected an abcess, then sidebone, then navicular "syndrome", and only MRI actually diagnosed the tear.
