You take your dog out for a walk, (currently doing max 20 mins with puppy, longer as usual with older dog). Forgive me if I'm being 'odd' here, but when they come back in, they ''shouldn't'' need to use the garden to bathroom/sniff/run about again? I like to send them to their beds to rest, not to continue 'play, or toliet' (which was done out in the fields).
What is the general say-so about this?
 
Are you doing 5 minute per month of age on lead with the pup?

I send my lot straight out after walks. Often, the youngsters don't wee when out, they're too busy. It's just a habit, they go out in the garden for a sniff/roll on the grass/wee. Adrenaline will be up if they've just been out, so unless they're shattered and been running round like mad things, they will want to sniff and be in the garden. With winter and horrible weather approaching, my lot get sent out as much as possible.
 
It depends if you train them to pee and poo in their own garden before you go out. If so they may need to go out again when you come back.
 
Daisy often wanders around the garden when we return from our walk - regardless of whether we've been out for 40 mins or 2 hours. I can't think why I'd stop her. If she's tired, she'll take herself off to bed.
 
Some puppies don't have the confidence to pee/poo off their own domain. It comes with age. As you are walking 20 mins, am guessing it is a 4 month old pup?? Don't worry about it/don't make an issue of it.
 
Our young lab (18 months) still poos as soon as she gets home, she just doesn't have time out on a walk, too many better things to do. She pees down her front legs while out as doesn't stop long enough to go properly. Mad hound.
 
Mollie is an adult now but still runs about like a loon when she first gets in, even though she's been walked for miles and is clearly tired. As CT said, their adrenaline is up still! Just takes them a minute to switch off and calm down. Within about 10 minutes of being home she'll be passed out snoring on the bed haha.
 
Ours will go out in the garden as soon as we get back from our walk, I play games with them sometimes which is something I cant do when we are out in the fields, its impossible to tire them all out but hiding stuff in the garden really makes them work and this does tire them as well as providing enormous fun, they often relieve themselves as well which is no hassle as its easier to pick up in the garden.
