Another feed Balancer thread...Spillers your thoughts

Hello All :)

I'll try to keep this short;

Put all three of my boys on NAF Oilovite as it looked good and claimed to do everything i wanted.

However 2months down the line all my horses are extremely fizzy and won't settle in their work. They are usually fed chaff/fibre beet and hay and a conditioning cube over the winter but i found the cubes hyped them up too much or never made a difference.

I looked on NAF's website last night and found out that the Oilovite has Maize in it so it's no wonder that my horses now think they are kangaroos.

So i'm now going to take them off this and put them on seaweed and linseed oil - which is what they were on before for the time being but i'd really like to feed them a balancer but alot of them are high in starch....

I do like the look of the Spillers original for the two big boys and the Lite one for my little pony....

What are your thoughts on balancers in general and which would you recommend?? :)

I did like the look of Saracen bio-life balancer until i saw it was a mix, contained maize and was really high in starch a big no no for my horses! :)

Compound feed balancers I don't think are worth the money as balancers. The volume you have to feed them at to get the amount of vits/mins 'needed' tends to negate the purpose of them. However, if you are feeding as an extra feed stuff I know there horses/pony that do very well on them.

Have you considered a powdered balancer like one from Progressive Earth or ForagePlus?

That sounds good, i think read somewhere that spiller used to make/own blue chip and iv used theyre instant calmers before and had fantastic results :)
 
My boy is fed on Alfa-a oil and unmolassed sugar beet. I used to have him on Baileys lo-cal and tried him on a multi-vitamin instead but his poos went very loose so went back to a balancer. Now have him on Spillers lite as it was on offer and he looks amazing. We're just at the end of the second bag and his coat is really shiny and his condition is superb. Would thoroughly recommend, hasn't had any noticeable effect on his fizziness though.
 
I am very conscious of not feeding balancers which are high in starch or protein (common in balancers). So i opted for Dengie hifi balancer for my two good doers. I then switched to Spillers lite Balancer due to it being better value for money and easier to get a hold of and they are great on this too. I wouldn't feed any of the other balancers on the market due to protein/starch content.
 
Spillers T.E.N supplements have just launched a Daily Balancer. It's half price (£8.99) on introductory offer but its full price seems quite reasonable anyway. just a powder supplement but from what you've said I think you'd be better with a powder supplement because then you don't have to worry about fizziness. I've never tried it personally, but at £8.99 you've got nothing to lose! With a powder balancer you then have more freedom to play around with the main part of their feed until you find something that conditions without fizz.
 
I used the spillers 1 as its low calorie & she puts on weight v.easily but I was convinced she was lacking in something . Shes been on it 2 weeks & I can def tell the difference :)
 
My competition mare is on the Spillers Original balancer and looking really well and her behaviour is excellent. No silliness or spooking. She has this with Dengie Meadow grass chaff and Spillers Stamina cubes. She is in regular work and out competing.
 
When I had an independent nutritionist out, she rated the Spillers balancers.
My pony is fed spillers daily balancer because she won’t eat a powdered balancer.
My boy is a dustbin and happily eats Pro Earth balancer.
 
I would say forage plus or progressive earth ( some can be picky about progressive earth) as they are formulated on research and much more cost effective then a regular balancer
