Just to let people know that I have made the decision for George to have the neurectomy and fasciatomy surgery. I spent a good hour with the vet on thursday and after lots of discussion I (with my vets blessing) decided that the surgery was the best thing for George with the best progonosis for him, the way his suspensories are damaged and his good leg and foot conformation make him an ideal candidate. The vet was talking about 75-80% chance of return to full work, with a 95% chance of him at least being a happy hack which I would be happy with.

It is his right hind that is damaged, but his left is slightly thickened so they will do both at the same time. Apparently this gives a much better progonosis and insures that he is balanced on both legs. The vet said that his gait may change as a result of the op, but so long as he is pain free and happy what does it matter? The vet has also checked his front legs as a precaution before going ahead with the surgery.

I know some people will agree and others disagree with my decision, but I had to make it with the facts and experience of my vet and George's best interests at heart.

I am of course worried in case I've made the wrong decision, and of course more imminently terrified about him having a GA :(

My friend and I are taking him in on Monday afternoon, I am not sure what state I will be in when I leave him :( then he is having the op on tuesday at lunchtime, I fear tuesday will be a very long day.

Thank you all for reading and for your support :)

Whatever the outcome, I think everyone on here will know that you have thought about this long and hard, and made the best decision you can for George. I read the original thread and there seemed to be a lot of people with positive stories who have had horses go through this surgery. Of course, there will always be sadder outcomes, that is the way things go, but I have everything crossed that George is one of the success stories (and they do seem to be in the majority). I will be thinking of you both on Tuesday and please do keep us updated. I, along with many others, are big fans of George, its easy to tell from your posts how much you love him, how much he is a big part of your family and I do know how worried you must be. Im quite sure he will bounce back from this and the 2 of you will be back out and about in no time xx

He'll be in good hands although that won't stop you worrying. You have made the decision based on vet advice and what you think is right for George which is what anyone would do.
A friend's horse had hind suspensory surgery last year on both legs and she's just back competing at elementary :)
Look forward to hearing how he is after op.
Try not to worry too much

You always do the right thing by George and I am sure this is the right treatment for him.

I know it is going to be such a worrying time for you, my thoughts are with you and I will keep everything crossed for Geoarge to make a good recovery.

Huge hugs. xx

I really hope that you are feeling a bit better having made your decision and it does sound like the right one for him :) I'm sure that tuesday will be an anxious time but I'm sending positive vibes for both of you and wishing him well!

Fingers crossed for the best outcome. XXXX

You are bound to be worried but you have made the best decision in your view for your horse, taking into account all the vet's advice, that is all that any-one can do.
Yes, some of us may have come to a different conclusion for our own horses in our own circumstances but I'm sure that every-one will wish you and George well.

Thank you for all your kind words and thoughts :)

I spent a long time agonising over what to do, but the long discussion with my vet cleared my mind. It wouldn't be the right decision for every horse and owner, and I totally understand that, but it seems best for George - if I had a crystal ball it would be so much easier.

He is not having it done at Rossdales, my own equine vet is doing it at their practise, he has done a fair number of these and his success record is good.

Thanks again I really appreciate it, there will definately be lots of hugs and treats for George in the coming days :)

Good luck, hope everything goes well. It's clear just how much you think of your horse and it's quite obvious that you're doing the very best thing by him.

Good luck! I'm so glad for you that both are being done and that your vet checked the fronts. In these circumstances I would have made the same decision

Hope you're OK GG. I know how worried I was when I left Che at the vet for a lameness workup and he was only there for an afternoon. Rest assured, he will be getting the very best care and this time tomorrow it will all be over and you can start the recovery process. Hugs and ((())) x
