Gorgeous George
Well-Known Member
Just to let people know that I have made the decision for George to have the neurectomy and fasciatomy surgery. I spent a good hour with the vet on thursday and after lots of discussion I (with my vets blessing) decided that the surgery was the best thing for George with the best progonosis for him, the way his suspensories are damaged and his good leg and foot conformation make him an ideal candidate. The vet was talking about 75-80% chance of return to full work, with a 95% chance of him at least being a happy hack which I would be happy with.
It is his right hind that is damaged, but his left is slightly thickened so they will do both at the same time. Apparently this gives a much better progonosis and insures that he is balanced on both legs. The vet said that his gait may change as a result of the op, but so long as he is pain free and happy what does it matter? The vet has also checked his front legs as a precaution before going ahead with the surgery.
I know some people will agree and others disagree with my decision, but I had to make it with the facts and experience of my vet and George's best interests at heart.
I am of course worried in case I've made the wrong decision, and of course more imminently terrified about him having a GA
My friend and I are taking him in on Monday afternoon, I am not sure what state I will be in when I leave him
then he is having the op on tuesday at lunchtime, I fear tuesday will be a very long day.
Thank you all for reading and for your support
