Ok, so after seeing a gorgeous Cob at Bury Farm today, who looked just like my girl, I am back on the shall I clip and hog her debate?

I will do it one day in my ownership of her because I am constantly tempted - I just always chicken out!

So - husband has photoshopped a pic of her as best he can to give the impression, I know it isn't an exact science.

So - your opinions - to hog and clip or not?

These pics were on the first day she came home - about 2 years ago, she now has less fat, more muscle!

If it helps, we will be doing our first basic dressage shows this summer, possibly a bit of jumping...

Thanks

xx

Oh poop, I take it you can't see the pictures!! They show up as if they have attached on my screen! Will have another go when I get home as am on my mobile! They are in my album on my profile but that might be private! Hold tight, home soon!

If you hog you'll have to clip those legs too....

I think he looks nice as a traditional, so I'd leave him hairy....

Ok, thanks for votes so far - I should say her mane is longer now, covers her neck totally but no where near 'long and traditional' yet!

My mare has been hogged and not hogged, but rarely left fully hairy. One word of warning if you hog, be very careful of sunburn on her crest (as I'm guessing like mine she has very pink skin).:(

Leave her trad. She's too pretty to hog, should be girly and long. I don't think she'd suit hogging. Stalk my albums for mine hogged and unhogged.

Argh. I thought more people would say go for it but I am glad you are being honest!

I think I am just trying to get a quick fix for her looking smart - perhaps I could learn to Spanish plait.....

I wish I could be more decisive!

Off with the lot, pull her tail, give her a bath and if she moves straight and is a well mannered ride, into the show ring as a novice ridden cob.

We hogged one horse as she had a right wispy mane and she looked smarter without it. Mane looks good condition and what about flies....prefer mine to have fringe etc for fly control!

Hadnt thought about sun burn. No leave alone she looks ok in all her glory and dressed.

Either, but if you're wanting showing, then hog :)

To be honest, this year would be our first year out and we will only do a handful of shows providing we get on ok....

How would I prevent sunburn in the crest? UV rug?

Also, are we saying it is ok to hog/full clip now? I am inclined to err on the side of those who say 'sod it' to the 'don't clip after February' thing!

Yes UV fly run with neck and High factor suncream rubbed in when exposed on hot days.

You can get away with full clipping piebalds all year round, just make sure it is done at least 2 weeks before a show as the pink/black look isn't a good one.;)
