Well, today was supposed to be a relaxed, fun sort of day: the livery yard's annual show. Because the population of the yard is varied according to disciplines, horse types, and ages, the yard show's classes are chosen to let everyone participate, somewhere. The YM brings in proper judges, and everything is run very professionally, but it's meant to be good family fun sort of thing...
The Spooky Pony was entered for every class in which he was eligible: In-hand and Ridden 14.2 and under, BTO, Best Mane and Tail, Fancy Dress, and the clear-round jumping. Well.
I arrived at the yard only 20 mins before the first class, because I had come in very very late last night from a conference down south, and I still had to stop off and pick up some things for the Fancy Dress this morning. Nevertheless, we got in the ring only slightly flustered for the in-hand class. He was pulled in 6th, which is about as good as one can expect for a slightly odd-looking creature such as him, and I was pleased with his behaviour. Slightly calmer, I saddled up for the ridden class...
...and here's where it all went pear-shaped!
I'd started a warm-up, and asked for canter. He seemed civilised enough, and I was just thinking about how I needed to establish a few sharper transitions before the class...and he got faster...and suddenly just plain bolted across the field.
I tried to pull him up, and as he does, he stopped dead, and deposited me not-so-neatly over a dropped shoulder.
As I sat there swearing at him, he leaped up and down numerous times on the spot, before someone else caught his reins.
I was in too much pain to mount again, so withdrew from the rest of our ridden classes. A nurse onsite established that my shoulder was not dislocated, nor probably broken, so I decided to post-pone A&E until after the show and BBQ---sure wasn't going to let the pony's little psychotic break ruin the whole day for me!
Instead, I spent all the extra time I suddenly had on putting together his Fancy Dress outfit. The extra time was welcome, because my shoulder hurts like blazes, and I'm pretty one-armed right now.
Anyway, we did manage a 3rd for Best Mane and Tail---he does have a nice tail
---and as usual, Fancy Dress was just about the most hotly contested category of all, with the entrants mainly being the adults on the yard! We weren't placed this year: I wasn't really expecting to be placed, since esoteric Star-Trek puns on "Mr. Spook" aren't necessarily in the radar of most horse people, but I was very happy with the way the costume turned out, and pleasantly surprised by how many people did get that he was Mr Spook! (pics below)
The BBQ was great: two sausages, a burger, a veggie kebab, salads, an obscene amount of cake, and I supplemented the paracetamol with a little white wine.
Afterwards (sober, I hasten to add!) I went home to get a book, and took myself to A&E for an x-ray, which confirmed that while my shoulder took a right bashing, nothing is broken. Just possible ligament damage, for which I'm to see a physio next week. I'm not even grounded, beyond what common sense will dictate!
(My shoulder flippin' hurts, and I think the pony can just stay in his field for a few days until it hurts less.)
So, some pics of Mr Spook! The eyebrow angle is a bit wrong, I concede.
