Shall we take bets and come back in a few years time :D ?

Mother quality standard bred reportedly 'about 15.2'
Father unregistered appaloosa, reportedly 'a little bit bigger than mother'.
Currently two years and nine months old, exactly 15.2, wither is already up an inch since arriving (was flat), due to hill grazing. Currently very leggy and growing very fast.

How big is he going to end up?

I think it is use string to get distance from elbow to fetlock, and then I think final wither height should be the same distance measured up from elbow (so basically just flip the string up the other way). Hope that makes sense. I might be wrong anyway!

As someone who buys foals, I find the string test the best indicator of adult height, much better than going on parents height. String/rope elbow to fetlock and elbow upwards thats pretty reliable. Personally I tend to disregard parents height after a foal I bought cheaply because she was so small ended up 18.1hh! And she had a 16.2 mother and a 15.2 father...

This was very accurate to within half an inch with my two year old. It said she would be 15.1 and she is 15hh and half an inch. Luckily she's very deep and takes up my leg well even in a dressage saddle. I'm almost 5' 10". OP, I think your boy will end up around 16.2hh. My girl's parents were both 16hh and so she's really dinky in comparison

Well, if by 'elbow' people mean the bony point of the elbow (which in him is some way above the line of his body), then he's heading for 17 hands! Knee to coronet says the same, I think, but I will recheck with a proper tape measure tomorrow. Told you he was leggy :D !

I'd prefer him smaller but I really don't care much as long as he's a nice brave, kind person.

Can't believe your mare is so tiny with you that tell, WT, but what a girth she's got. Lovely :)

My sisters 2 1/4 year old appy is 16 1/2 at his withers and 16:3 on his bum 😂 i need to remember to do the string test on him

Both his half brothers who we have are both 16:3 so he would make that at least.

I never think of appys as big horses. They must be quite an eyefull!

Yep

The think a lot of people dont know is there is a huge difference in breed standard between American Appys and British Appys.
A true foundation appy from America is no bigger than 15:2.

Is it Imgur you can use to upload photos? I will try and get some.

At Holkham beach two years ago, my dad had only been riding six months and had his first canter on the beach in a group of eight horses and the elephant just looked after him. And stayed at the back or in the middle.
He was told to stay in light seat and hold on to the neck strap 😂😂

You have used the link rather than the code for forums etc. There should be a choice of which code to copy on the right of the image when you click on it on the imgur site.

Thank you. we have been so lucky with them. Appys are just the best to have

I'm finding that out :) love your big spotty boys! Mine's the MGB GT version to your BMW X5s :)

Measurement this morning on both string tests is identical 16.2. I can cope with that :)

That would be lovely. 16.2 is a perfect height. I personally look best on a 16.2 (although prefer 16 hands just because they're easier to hold together). But I have a dinky mare, lol.

Wow, you look tiny on him. You can see what a chunk he is. He's gorgeous.

He really was. He had a cheeky character but he was very very easy to ride they all have been.
They are realy responsive to aids and weight so they made you ride properly.
Im hoping the dark spotty will get out and about this year after his keratoma op.
