Then what should we do with all the unwanted Horses?
Can't comment on that jemima, maybe you (or OP) could reply to her post on FB where she defend herself.
I have nothing against "rescuing" ponies, I have one here whose next stop was the meat man, I have two more who were due to be pts but have come right - one completely, the other better than field sound, but I actually pay for mine out of my own money and have never asked for donations to support them.
It might be perfectly well meaning, it might be perfectly 'generous'. But what it isn't is practical in any way, shape or form.
Frankly, if anyone takes on a horse for any reason when they can't properly afford to feed their own children then yes, that is completely warped and leaves a seriously bad taste in the mouth. If that were the actual situation then I should sincerely hope SS were aware of the family.
We all love horses (I should hope, or none of us would be on HHO in the first place). But anyone who believes that we are not careering rapidly, irreversibly and necessarily towards a cull in the UK needs to wake up. The situation is not sustainable. Sad, but end of, and it's been our own sorry doing. There are ideals, and then there are necessities.
'Rescue' has become a very distorted word. There are many lessons that need to be learned by a lot of people if this situation can and will ever be sorted out.
I can remember when we were looking for a new one, we went to a rescue rehoming place locally to us.
we were quite shocked when we went there, she had over 40 horses there, and not one suitable to rehome, They were all on the older side, which I didnt have too much of a problem with, but they all had issues. One was about 28, blind, so never, ever came out of its stable. Just stood at the back. Others were absolutely leathal as you walked past, she actually warned us not to get too close, as the majority of them would bite. She had turnout, but it was ALL mud, there were 2 schools there, so that was the basic turnout, for 40 ish horses.
I cant see the point in this. What is the point in keeping a horse at the age of 28, and blind, which had absolutely no quality of life. She was asking for money, rugs, feed, as she couldnt afford to keep going. But if people actually done the right thing, and the kindest thing to alot of these horses, there wouldnt be the problem in over crowding in the rescue centres.
Sorry, probably went off in a bit of a tangent there!!
JFTD i confess to being surprised at the rug request given that it obviously had plenty of fat stores, to put it politely lol! But the saddle offering is very odd, though its quite tight knit and lots of people are friends in rl on there![]()
I know, I went and looked at the rest of them. Properly bloody dim the lot of them.
