We took a policy out with petplan this week for Alfie. We have just got the certificate through and it doesnt have "death by illness" covered on it. I have queried it with the company who say that they removed this two months ago and nolonger cover it.

I know its only a minor thing but this is one of the reasons we went with this company rather than another. Its advertised on their website as being covered and its in the policy booklet as being covered that they have sent me. There is NOTHING anywhere to say it is not covered now. Is there anytying i can do about this as they are advertising a product that they dont honnor????

If they are currently advertising it on the web site then they took your money under false pretences, if you are unhappy with the policy I would ask for a full refund on that basis.

I think sometimes you have to accept that you cannot cover for absolutely every eventuality. In the long term it will cost you more money anyway. I recently called around the companies to check whether my cover with NFU was economical. I found Petplan to be the most expensive, and the cover was not as good.

I assume you have had cause to want this type of cover before ?

Petplan have a fantastic vet fees cover as the limit refreshes itself each year even if you are claiming for the same illness ( doesthat make sense??) which most other insurers dont offer. When they talk about death by illness i guess that means they dont pay you the purchase cost of the dog if it dies because of an illness, but do if it is an accident?
I guess it is just a case of weighing up all the pros and cons and what is important to you, my parents had a dog that required long term medication after the year the illness was exempt from the policy and my parents had to decide whether to pay for the meds or the dog to die, therefore the fact the illness cover rolls over each year is really important to me.
Insurance is such a minefield

I have had tons of problems with my dog which is still ongoing she is in the vets every week and on medication and had been in twice for x rays. Am insured with pet plan and they were great in paying my vet and i now have a continuation claim ongoing as my dog is prob needing to have an op. though as I said in my post lame dog I hate she can not run round I have peace of mind that she wil get her treatment and we do not have to worry about finding the money. Petplan also paid quickly when my mare had a colic op and we later had to have her pts. Though they should not false advertise I think you have to weigh up the pros and cons of each insurance company and if you feel there is not enough pros I would ask for a full refund.

Our eldest dog is covered by Kennel Club (will never forget to change it again!!) but they only cover you for one year for one illness/injury. She has now been on rimadyl (sp?) since she was 18months, she is now 9. However, when we got our two pups we changed them straight over to Petplan which is great because our bitch is now 2 1/2 and she will also be on rimadyl for the rest of her life which we'll be able to continue to claim on.

Which cover did you take out? If you took the 'Covered for Life' then according to their website you should have Death from Illness cover, and I do not see how Petplan could say otherwise. However if you took the Pet Value cover then this clearly states that Death from Illness is NOT covered unless you took out the optional Death Benefits cover.
If the latter is the case I'm sure you could probably ask them to add this additional benefit for a little more premium?

I took out the Covered for Life policy for my springer spaniel and considering he has been on £150 of medication per month for the past 5 years, Petplan have been brilliant and pay up year after year with no fuss at all. I dread to think how I would have paid for his on-going drugs if I'd taken out a standard insurance policy!!!

I took the extra covered for life policy which covers him for vets fees £6000 a year for life as oppose to £4000. They told me it covered death by illness and its in my policy booklet and online but they now state they dont cover death by illness in ANY policy as they stopped it two months ago, even though it states they do in my policy booklet

Ill prob stay with them as otherwise they do have a good policy, but im just frustarted and alittle miffed that they have advertised it as such and its in my policy booklet!!!

have you tried m&s - they cover death by illness up to £1500 and up to £7000 vets fee's which renew each year long as you stay with them. Just had my renewal through for my lurcher and it's £20 a year more than last year (total £220 for the year) which i thought was good considering we claimed for a broken leg in January

Although I've only worked in insurance for a couple of months, and HGV insurance at that, I am reasonably sure that they must honour the terms that you agreed to at the start of the policy. They should have notified you in writing of any specific change to the cover in your agreed policy.

The company I work for has a specific office for pet insurance, I'll give one of the guys there a ring when I'm in the office tomorrow and confirm that with them for you.

If that's the case then you might be able to bring action against Petplan to get the cover you were originally after.

I really think that someone at Petplan has got a bit confused.
If you have the Covered for Life policy The Death from Illness is still clearly covered on their website and they can't simply say that they withdraw the cover 2 months ago when it is still shown as provided on the website.
I would ask Petplan to put in writing to you that the Death from Illness isn't covered because I'm sure you'll find someone has just made a mistake or thinks that you are talking about the Value policy instead.

I have rang them again and they still insist im not covered. Its not on my actual certificate just in the policy terms and conditions booklet and online, and they just say that they havent had time to update the internet or the policy booklet

( policy booklet only issued april 2008 ) I have lodged a formal complaint with them and will see how far that gets me!!

Call Trading Standards they will deal with this direct and sort it out for you. I am not an expert but I would think that they have to honour the terms and conditions as advertised.
