Brilliant, love things like that! Is his prognosis for a return to work or are you just hoping for him to be comfortable retired?

That was a hell of a size of a keratoma! We have had a few removed from the racehorses over the years but most were less than half the size of that one!

My horse (now sadly no longer with us) had a similar operation about 12 years ago. He was fully work sound afterwards. Hoping the same for Finn.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing.

what symptoms did he have which lead to this diagnosis please?

He was intermittently lame on that foot for about 10 days, varying between mildly to non weight bearing. The vet initially suggested an abscess but after poulticing there was no change. So we nerve blocked and X-rayed. Some horses have repeated abscesses in a hoof with a keratoma before the tumour itself is diagnosed.

Great to see the video, fingers crossed for a full recovery!

We’re just over 1yr since surgery (24/11/20) I’m back riding now after a few months off due to bruising etc from how the hoof capsule dealt with the defect growing out. This day last year was the first time I saw the hole in his foot, as it was the first bandage change since he came home from the vets! It’s a fascinating process watching it heal.

Keratoma ops fascinate me. It’s amazing what vets can do and what horses can recover from. Thanks for sharing!
